Authors no longer available @ kobobooks?

Has anyone else noticed that a particular author they like is no longer available at kobobooks?

For example, on 15 October I bought some Jeffery Deaver books planning on going back to purchase more today (29 October in Oz).

Now when I search for this author (under various categories, as well as through the direct link from my library) I get the following message:

Sorry, we could not find results for "Jeffery Deaver" in any category.

I know this author had a long list of available books on 15 October

TIA

Could be anything. Fictionwise and Mobipocket, for example have lost many author ebook lists over the last 6-10 months beginning when the agency 5 publishers restricted ebooks due to distribution and rights negotiations.

When loss of an author's ebooks at one store occurs, best to shop around.

just re-booted and he's def not showing up for me.

a search by his individual books shows nothing either ~ weird!

maybe a recent geographic restriction has been placed on this author

edited to say 'thank you' to sabredog ... as well as 'snap!'

@ sabredog - seem to be available for download only in the US.

must have been some conniptions by the publishing house very recently

I'm in New Zealand and I can't see any books by Deaver either on kobobooks. I agree, they have probably been goegraphically restricted. Drop them a line and ask them. I did earlier this week and got a really helpful reply back - and a promise to do a focus on Australia and Kiwi authors, which they are doing now!

Unfortunately I can't see the first one on their list - Peter Carey's His Illegal Side. Very annoying, I'm only a 3 hour plane trip from Oz but I assume it has been geo restricted. Mamasue, can you see it?

No, not able to see that author either .. darn!

seems strange that these restrictions to Deaver have happened in just over a week.

glad I purchased the couple I did at the time.

Welcome to the reality of geographic restrictions. Even Aussie authors are restricted from Aussie ebook readers

yep, am aware that we can't get access to our own authors! and Bryce Courtenay's ebooks are soooooooooo exxy.

can you please explain to me why the publishing houses seem to keep changing availabilty? (geographically?)

those Deaver books I bought on 15 Oct are now not available - are the publishers trying to restrict the sales of ebooks because it affects the sale of paper books?

I didn't think we "ereaders" would be a threat to them just yet!

About 6 months ago the Agency 5 (5 major publishers) sparked by the entry of Apple's iPad with ibooks and annoyed by Amazon's ebook marketing philosophy changed the goal post location. Books previously not GR became GR and Agency pricing came into play (price fixing).

I lost access to 75% of my purchased ebooks from Diesel. Sometimes GR changed mid series meaning newer books could not be purchased etc.

It is all to do with contractual arrangments and distribution arrangements. In reality the real issue is that the agency 5 publishing houses cannot come to terms with the modern digital age, refusing to change their mid 20th century distibution model and their main desire to protect hard cover sales, where the main profit making stream is.

They gripe about piracy, but they are the ones that encourage it due to their refusal to evolve.

Buyers turn to other means to obtain the book that they want to buy but are prevented buying by GR.

thank you for your detailed reply - appreciate it

you must have been really p'd off when you lost access to that many books!

did you receive any re-imbursement at all?

I must make sure that I move any books I purchase onto my Kobo (and PC) immediately after purchase...JIC

ebooks make excellent sense to me - all those trees which could be saved. might put op shops out of business though! LOL

I complained (loudly) and after a few support ticket messages the CEO organised a reimbursement for me. They were totally sympathetic.

Have you tried at your local Aussie Kobo ebook retailer? There are lots of Jeffery Deaver ebooks available on Whitcoulls in NZ, so they are definitely available outside North America.

Michael Tamblyn, VP Content, Sales & Merchandising for Kobo, has been actively going after rights to sell more books/authors on the Aussie and NZ versions of Kobo books. One big problem recently has been negotiating with Hatchette Publishers.

November is apparently AU and NZ month on Kobo--so maybe they are making progress.
