Smile Another new owner

Greetings, I've been reading these forums for months while I deliberated over which reader to acquire and you all convinced me that the Sony was the way to go. In fact, I got one for my 70+ year-old mother. We are both very happy!!!

I got one last week as well. I am very happy with the Sony Reader 650. The lighted case was a good purchase as well.

Congrats on your new readers Puck and rguin! I've had mine for about three weeks or so. I'm loving it!

Puck--when I bought my reader, also bought one for my seventy year old Mother In Law. I put some books on it for her and gave her a few pointers. She's very impressed and loving hers as well.

I've just upgraded my 600 to a 650 - got £80 for the 600 and £40 for my DS, so only had to pay £80 for the 650 from Waterstones.

It is a major improvement in terms of the user interface, and screen quality. I can't comment yet on battery life as I haven't had it long enough to run it down.

I find the battery life quite impressive -- took quite a bit of usage to get it down from 4 bars to 3 on a recent trip!

I just bought a new 650 as well. I love it. I do, though, have an issue with the stylus. I liked the more pointy tip of the stylus that came with the 600. This one seems less precise when drawing since the tip is rounded.

I bought the 650 today at Borders and a Kindle at Staples yesterday....I only have a few days to figure which one is the keeper....I prefer the 650's controls and touchscreen and free lighted case !!! But I like the Kindles "darker" fonts...I can make the 650's screen brighter and darker but not the fonts...Is there a hack anyone knows of...?? I would rather keep the Sony !!

The attached document compiled by JSwindon, one of MR's members, should answer all your questions.

Can't help you with the fonts, but I'd still advise keeping the Sony, simply because you'll have more options when buying e-books - the Kindle uses a proprietary file format, so you can only buy from Amazon, whereas you can buy anywhere for the Sony as long as it's in the ePub format (although I don't recommend Barnes & Noble because of their insanely restrictive DRM).

Glad I could help, but Jwindon did the hardest work in compiling the PDF.

By far the easiest way to modify the fonts on the new Sony readers is to flash the Russian firmware. The flashing process replaces the default Sony font with the Droid font. What is even better is that is changes the location of the userstyle.css file to one which can be edited by the end user. This means one can easily use any font you wish and the font will be used by ALL epub documents, even those protected by DRM, that don't have embedded fonts. One no longer needs to use Calibre to modify the epub files individually.

I'm currently using Cambria for all my epubs.

Also, ask yourself if the Sony's inferior font rendering would be a deal breaker without a side by side comparison.
