If you just got a new Nook...

For the experienced users, what are the most helpful tips you would like to have had when you just got your Nook? Tips and tricks you've found helpful? A particular thread (other than the stickies) you thought was most valuable?

Thanks!

The number one thing I found useful was the site on rooting the nook at nookdev. I wish I had found it months ago.

Thanks chas. What benefit does rooting provide? Easier to find books?

The nookdev site says not to root the nook if running version 1.4.1 or later. Will I miss out not being able to root?

This is no longer applicable, but rooting 1.4.1/2 is not easy.

Wow! Thanks Doug. I guess this does beg the question though. Is a manual supposed to be included in the box or is that hidden somewhere as an ebook?

The manual is located on the B&N website: http://images.barnesandnoble.com/pim..._NOOK_v1_4.pdf

It's also located in "My Documents" on your NOOK.

this actually becomming more and more common as of late with all electronic gadgets. Especially ones that you sort of need a computer to at least start with. I think it's a green thing.

I know my Sansa Fuze, Panasonic blu ray, Droid X, Nook, all came with either just a simple basic start up manual or nothing at all.

It's the trend now.

It makes a huge difference in being able to sort and search and see any non-B&N books. Without these features, I would have dumped my nook and switched to an ebook with a real database ability. It looks as though the next firmware update, 1.5 has choosen to ignore these problems still, although we will have to wait and see.

If you don't have an extensive ebook library, you will probably be happy. I have 10 years of accumulated books, so I need real database functions. The B&N version library is very limited and buggy and fails on over 1275 books.
