Kindle 2 to Kindle 3 Upgrade?
I have a Kindle 2 and am considering an upgrade to the Kindle 3 Wi-Fi for $139. I'm wondering if the improvements are worth the money.
Any comments? ![]() |

I would suggest that you go through this forum and read the different postings on the K3. a lot of people have written about their reactions and feelings about the K3

Thanks -- I'm fairly new to the forum and wasn't exactly sure how to do a search. I'll scan through the posts and see what I can find.

I love my k3 wifi but I have a professional level knowledge of networking. And I have no experience with the old versions of kindle. And I do not use my kindle to surf the web nor do I make notes very often. I do love the dictionary. My kindle does have tech ref books on it as well as novels and my Bible studies.

Unless you really need the wifi for some reason (it is much more convenient for me personally), I see no reason to upgrade. I have both, but it was really just an excuse to buy a 2nd one so the wife could have one. I'd suggest checking out a K3 at Best Buy/Target/Staples to see if it is really something you need.

Key features of Kindle WiFi
For me the key features of the Kindle WiFi is to sync notes, bookmarks and highlights between the Kindle and the Kindle App for the PC.
It synchronizes both mediums with each other. |

K2 can synchronize between all of the Kindle platforms as well. Actually, so can the K1.
I cannot speak for K2 to K3. I can speak for keeping the K1 over getting a K2. I took a look at the list of features on the K2 and decided that upgrading was not worth it to me. At the time my K1 had cost $369 and the K2 was at that price. I liked the option of the replaceable battery (never used it) and the memory card slot (never used it). I didn't think the change in grey scale or the text to speech was worth it. All in all, I was happy with my K1 and didn't feel the need for a K2. I had some serious gadget envy though. When collections came out I started jonsing for a K2. By then I had seen the DX and knew I wanted a larger screen but didn't want to pay close to $500. When the DXG came out with a better screen, collections, and a price drop I went for it and have loved it ever since. So my advice is this. Look at the features on the K3 and ask if there is anything on it that you feel you have to have. If not, stick with your K2. The good news for you is that if you decide to go for a K3 it is a whole lot cheaper then $369. (grins) |

The primary improvement is the screen. The 3rd generation "Pearl" screen of the K3 is a dramatic improvement, contrast-wise, compare to the screen of the K2.

Sure the screen is better, and it is always nice to have the best currently available; however I do not feel that it alone justifies replacing the device. I do have both, but I never notice the difference in normal usage (it is obvious side-by-side). The K2 is every bit as readable.

I found the screen to be noticeably improved, plus it's speedier on the page turns. Also, K3 adds PDF annotations.
My favorite thing has turned out to be the wifi. When I first got my Kindle 1, I emailed all kinds of files to it. Pretty much anything that I would normally print out and throw away later, I sent to Kindle instead. When Amazon started charging for delivery, I didn't want to run up charges for disposable documents. Now, with wifi, I can once again email everything to Kindle, free of charge. |

The Browser
The Kindle 3 browser is much improved over the K2 browser.
Can you upgrade your K2 browser to that of the K3's browser via a software/firmware update? |

I don't think there have been any K2 updates since the K3 was announced. Based on my experience with the K1, I seriously doubt that there will be many more updates for the K2.

I like the form factor & screen much better than the K2.
