Things to do in Denver when you're dead

Hello, I'm Jennifer and I've just started down the road of publishing my book, Good Cop, Dead Cop. I failed to find an agent or publisher and gave up a few years ago and now am writing a new book, but I figured, I should at least publish my previous book as an ebook. My friend Lee said what the hell, a little money is better than no money.

I'll also start writing about my experiences at my website and, of course, here.

I guess I've settled on this production scheme, Word to Dreamweaver (trying to match style names along the way), Dreamweaver to Sigil on the Mac (very annoying that sometimes style changes are not displayed without reopening the epub) and then Sigil to calibre for the Kindle.

I hope I won't drive people nuts with my questions and I apologize if I do.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Thank you very much Geoff. I must say this process of creating an ebook is bizarre. It seems far more art than science with very little documentation, or rather I should say no comprehensive documentation. I see lots of FAQs and lots of help in forums, but because so many of the tools are open source (to which I am forever indebted), there are no real manuals.

For instance, Kindle Previewer for Mac had difficulties sending my MOBI file (Sigil EPUB converted to MOBI via calibre) to Kindle for Mac. Instead of Kindle for Mac opening, calibre would open and attempt to reload the file I had just opened with Kindle Previewer. Truly a vicious circle. Searching for "open with kindle for mac" in Google actually produced a singleton. It must be a relatively new feature.

I was really stumped until I just tried dragging the icon of the MOBI file onto the Kindle of Mac icon. Et voilá, my brilliant Mac started Kindle for Mac, which added my book to the library. It would have been a lot easier if Kindle for Mac had a menu item for manually adding a book from my hard drive, but I can understand them not including that feature — most users would never desire such a feature.

All in all, this has been a interesting and challenging experience.

Looked at another way, if life was easy, it'd be no fun at all ....
