How to change the darkness of the screen

Is there a way to change darkness of the screen, the text is gray not black.

No, that's just how eInk looks. There isn't a way to really change the contrast of the display.

If you have access to the content (not DRM'd, etc), then you could potentially edit the file and make it use a bold font, which may help with what you want. Depends on what kind of document/eBook it is.

Well, apparently in some devices there's an internal (not normally accessible) knob with which you can increase contrast. However it will also increase the traces left by the previously displayed page on the screen, so it's not necessarily a good idea.

Using a bold font is probably better as Shaggy said.
