Hrm...can't decide...shocker :D
So I can't decide which reader I would like the most. My birthday is next week and I think my wife is getting me a Nook, so in a way the decision is possibly already made for me. However I've been reading alot about the various readers and have become slightly concerned about the future of the Nook and B&N.
Here are some of my thoughts personally on the two devices: Nook:
Kindle 3:
Some things that I NEED to have (rooted or basic): Sort books by Genre and series, or the ability to search by those headers. Easily allow me to upload my own books to the device. Long battery life. Ease of navigation, I can easily figure out most navigation menus but sometimes I don't want that hassle. I'd rather just easily flip around through things. My biggest issue is I've recently replaced every book in my physical library with an ebook equivlent, all 350+ books. Most are in the .lit or .epub format and it's not an issue for me to convert to MOBI format with calibre. It'll take awhile but totally doable :P |

Both readers let you sideload your books via USB.
Kindle lets you email them or download them via the browser. Kindle has the longer battery life. Kindle collections let you search or sort. Sounds like you're looking for somebody to talk you out of a Kindle. ![]() |

i have the Nook and just love it. Don't worry about the future of BN, it looks like they will be going private at some point. The have made several moves that points them to the fact that the digital ereading is their future with Nook ereader being at the center, Nook Study, Nook apps for Android, iphone, ipod touch and iPad and home computers,
Their library is solid and since it supports epub you can shop pretty much where you want and that includes checking out books from your library. You can't with the Kindle unless you want to do something illeagle. The Nook's battery life will get you anywhere from 5 to 8 days. It's shorter than the Kindle but it's the tradeoff for have the LCD Screen. And let's face it, finding time to plug in a device after 5 days or so isn't exactly going to ruin your life. besides you can still read it while it's charging. The nook is already epub so no sending your books to BN via email and sending them back. That's a little annoying. You can just sideload them straight to the Nook and also you buy books from other sources that are in epub and for some reason you want to try another epub ereader your library comes with you unaltered or any other type of conversion. The kinle is again reformating again and again. Just too much of an unneccary headache to keep on doing that if you ask me. Nook has replacable battery Nook and expandable memory you can finger swipe using the lcd screen (when it goes to sleep) to turn pages. It gives a more natural feel and flow when reading than clicking a button. Though if you like clicking a button you can as well. Instore support and InStore Experience. Bring your nook in any bn and you get extra coupons, offers, something free from the Starbucks cafe, read any book for an hour. It's pretty fun. and lets face it much much more stylish accesories ![]() Last edited by boswd; 09-26-2010 at 10:36 PM. |

well the Nook has had a series of firmware updates, 4 so far since it's release last October. and the next one i would be surprised if more sorting/folder options aren't part of the next one. What I do in the meantime is use Calibre for my Folders and such. It's worked out well so far, since my library is on Calbire as well.

On the same side does Kindle pull tags from calibre as well for collections or do you have to manually create collections? |

A good question that can help me out maybe. Do the android apps for kindle and nook use the same sorting options as the full device? That would let me check things out a bit more.

Sony's software has Collections and I have made collections of all the authors that I have several books or series from.

I chose the Kindle 3 because the Nook was so very heavy. Also, the touch screen on it seemed more annoying than the Kindle's keyboard and pretty erratic when in use. The Kindle seemed a bit faster on page turns and both have lovely perle ink screens that are easy to read in the evening.
I have converted my epubs and rtf's from my Jetbook to mobi and transferred and set up collections on the Kindle 3. Very easy to do and now there is a third party software available to facilitate this function. I love the light smaller size of the Kindle 3, reminding me of my Jetbook, which is being retired ONLY for evening use. |

I have both and like the K3 better.
I'm not that impressed by the Nook's touchscreen. It looks nice but it's slow and is probably largely responsible for the Nook's bad battery life. Nook page turns are slower than the K3's. The Nook is heavier - definitely something to take into account if you read on your back holding the device above your face. Being able to mail docs to the K3 is a nice feature. I don't like how shiny the touchscreen and bezel of the Nook are. I found the reflectivity to be pretty annoying. The K3 dictionary is easier to use (i.e. short definitions that stay on the page you're reading) I think the best thing about the Nook is that it supports epub. |

Have you considered the new Sony PRS-650? It has the updated screen of the Kindle, it's nice and light, you can view books by bookcover, and you might enjoy the touchscreen, and it's battery should last longer than the nooks - about 2 weeks per charge. It also has an onscreen keyboard, 12 dictionaries included, can handle a wide variety of formats, you can now sort books into collections on the reader itself...
For some reason, the Nook has never appealed to me (but then again, I don't live in the U.S, so even buying it would be a hassle). I would consider buying a Kindle or the Kindle DX as a backup reader, mostly because of the Amazon Kindle store access. Of the 6 inch readers on the market, however, the PRS-650 is by far the most appealing to me, and seems to be much better for viewing PDFs than the Nook or Kindle (I read a lot of PDFs).
