Massive Spam Attack

MobileRead is currently experiencing a massive spam attack by Chinese language posts.

We're removing it as quickly as we can, and we're trying to block it generically.

Please do not report the Chinese language spam to us any more, as we can spot it quickly ourselves.

I've seen it this past week, but I know that it "magically" disappears pretty quickly. ("Magically" here meaning "hard work" happens behind the scenes.)

Any thought to limiting new accounts or new users who have never posted before to a maximum of 1 post per day until a moderator says otherwise?

I took care of some of them in the forums, I have Mod powers. It was pretty nasty, with more popping up while I was cleaning the existing mess. I can't imagine dealing with the whole boards full.

I second the new user limit of 1 post per day (not even allow #2+ to hit the moderation pending area) until a Mod 'approves that the user is following MR guidelines .

Don't many new users join to ask about some problem they are having, and it takes a few back and forths to clarify what the problem actually is?

Rules are made because folk don't behave. The result is inconvenience to those that DO follow them. Still, You can reply to the post. (A PM to the forum level Mod (takes the burden off of the greenies), could get a temporary release

And I wish more new users took time to read the forums and get a feel for how thing are done in each. Many times I see 2 different posts appear, asking essentially the SAME question, that has been asked dozens of times before.
(OK I know MR's search is pretty weak. I have tried to find posts I know are ther to reference to a help request)

Even experienced MR peeps, like myself, are guilty of asking what must seem obvious questions. Sometimes I do a google search for the answer first, putting mobileread.com after the search terms to find posts from here; but not always.

Often I come straight to the fount of all wisdom re ereaders etc. I think obvious questions from new users should be WELCOMED: new blood is necessary to keep any forum alive and fresh.

These tentative, and seemingly obvious, enquiries may lead to the person becoming a long term member and expert who goes on to be helpful to other newbies. They should be welcomed with open arms UNTIL they post spam or abuse or anything else which seriously breaks the rules.

Would a limit of 1 post per hour for new users be a reasonable balance of community goals?

What bugs me is if somebody posts a new question or topic without noticing that there was already a similar topic on the first or second page. It just seems like it should be common sense to look through the first page or two of of recent posts to see what's been discussed recently.

I know what you mean about the search function - I've also had the issue of trying without success to find a thread I know had been there.
