Help!

Rec'd my PEz yesterday. Charged it up and tried to download books this AM and have had nothing but problems.

First, my computer wouldn't recognize the device. Finally got that to work (or at least I thought I did). The contents of the drive appeared on the screen, but when I tried to transfer books, I kept getting error messages ... device not connected, can't transfer book, etc.

After messing with it for quite some time without success, I unplugged the USB and let everything set for awhile.

When I plugged it back it, clicked OK on the Reader, the drive showed up on "My Computer" but when I open it, the page is blank.

Also ... I downloaded the firmware before I did any of this and am unable to set the clock. When I click on "5" in Settings, nothing happens.

ALSO ... on the main menu, when I click on "Digital Editions" nothing happens, even though it says there are 2 Directories.

<frustrated sigh>

Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

P.S. I'm usually fairly 'tech-ish,' but this has got me bamboozled.

Your problem seems similar to what I and some others have experience with the Hanlin V5 (PocketPRO). The PocketPRO is supposed to be USB2.0 capable, and most of them are. However, there are some that have a very high error rate when running at USB2.0 speeds. If you try to copy books onto the device when the USB2.0 connection has a very high error rate you can end up corrupting the FAT16 file system. Through a bunch of trial and error, I found that my PocketPRO would work flawlessly at USB1.1 speeds. Since USB1.1 worked great I ended up using an old USB1.1 four port hub to force all USB communication with the PocketPRO to be at the lower speed, and it works great now.

IF your PocketPRO FAT16 file system has been corrupted by poor USB2.0 performance, you will need to reformat the internal storage. If you need to do that do NOT do a fast format, do a full format.

Click on "5" to set clock?
Press the 5 button
You should see the setting screen for time and date.
you need to press 06 for 6 AM and 18 for 6PM (24 hour clock)
use the page turn to get from time to date
Enter saves.
Date is DD MM YYYY this is: 02 18 2019

Power Off / Reset: forgets

2. Press the number six button to bring up "settings"
3. Press the number five button to bring up Time & Date

I just re-connected and was able to access the internal memory (finally!). Went to my ADE and moved a book to my PEz device (which was shown in "Bookshelf"). Then I "safely" removed the USB and looked for the book. Nowhere to be found.

Hi Nan and welcome to Mobleread's Aztak forum.

Someone else may crosspost another answer while I'm writing this so feel free to disregard my comments. Also, my computer keyboard is acting up so I may not always get my capital letters )

First, getting books on the reader. There are two places to put them: 1) on an SD card in the SD slot on the top and 2) into the reader's own memory. The thing is, you can only see one of the two places at a time. If you put books on the PPro's own memory and have an SD card in it, only the ones on the SD card show up--the ones you put on the PPro's memory are still there but you can't access them. Personally, i've always used the SD card because they are cheap and easier to put books on.

My computer has a little slot marked for "SD/MMC -MS/PRO' for these memory cards. When I put a card in the slot my PC pops up a window showing the contents of the card, usually showing it as SD CARD NAME F: or whatever name I gave the SD card when I formatted it. Now I can treat it like any other Drive letter.

I made folders for Fiction and Non-fiction, etc., and sub folders under those for non-fiction\History or Fiction\JaneAusten, etc. Then all i have to do is drag-and-drop my ePub files into the right folder. When I plug the SD card back in and turn the PPro back on, the books and folders are where I want them.

There is one thing to know if you chose to copy your books on this way: always turn the PPro off--not just a power save-screen lock, but actually turn it off by pressing the on/off button for about 5 seconds until you see the "Astak" screen. Otherwise it can screw up your folders. And i never put spaces in the folder names because the bookmarking feature won't work if you do. Also, be sure to click on Windows' little green check-mark and tell it you want Windows to give your SD card back.

Setting the time is less helpful with this method because every time you turn the PPro off and back on it forgets the time you set before. Of course, you can reset it. I don't know what's with the system refusing to let you set the time though.

Does the 5 button work at any time else?
eg While viewing an EPUB type. 5 is used to change Zoom levels.
hWile in the file listing. 5 Switches to <=> from SD card

Check your SD card for disk errors(since you seem to have a card reader), then
Download v5setup.bin AGAIN and re-flash. you may have had corruption.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm charging the Reader again just in case that had something to do with things acting up. It's still flashing red/orange, so until it's fully charged I won't be able to try your suggestions. Rest assured I'll be back if things don't get straightened up!

This has been very frustrating because of course I was anxious to begin reading books I've downloaded. Oh well. Maybe tomorrow.

Please do the suggestions by those above. Do not get frustrated again. You can call Tech Support tollfree, Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. PST at: 1-866-368-8788 or email: support@astak.com. These people are friendly and can walk you through this.

First priority is to charge 100% (8-12 hours)

THEN, do the latest firmware upgrade (www.theEZreader.com under "support").

The FAQ sheet will tell you how to be sure you are charging correctly and how to do a Firmware Upgrade.

When you go into settings do you see 5 options?

1. Key sound is on/off
2. Language
3. Replace Font
4. About
5. Time & Date

If you don't see "5. Time & Date" you'll need to update your firmware to a newer version which has the time and date functionality built in (early firmware didn't have time and date).

Writernan never said if the words were on the screen, only the key press did not work.
The upgrade did not take which may explain some of the other issues (except USB).

I was finally able to download a couple of books. I did not put them into any folder, so on the main menu, they are listed as #4 and #5 (#6 is the User's Manual). I can open #4 and #6 but nothing happens when I press the #5 button, same as when I try to set the date and time.

Sounds like a bad button (scan matrix line)
Do you have a stuck button? All presses should feel similar (a little click).

The buttons all feel similar. None of them seem to be 'stuck.' It's just that nothing happens when I use #2 and #5 ... although a few minutes ago, I tried again to set the clock and the screen appeared ... !?! However, when I went back to the main menu and tried to open the #5 ebook, nothing happened. Went back to Settings. The #5 button refused to cooperate this time.

Not sure what you mean by "scan matrix line" ... ??

I just called Support and left a message. Will let everyone know what happens.
