And Then There Were None

You know, I love Eric Frank Russell.

So I was delighted to find this novelette online for free: And Then There Were None

It's in HTML only and not that good downloadable and convertible, I'm afraid. But still it is in one page and could be converted to e-book formats.

Eric Frank Russell is one of the best sf writers ever, in my humble opinion. He had lots in common with another great, namely Heinlein. If you don't know him, read this (longer) story. Maybe you make a discovery. Not for closed minds, though.

EFR is one of my favorite authors also. NESFA's short story collection can be recommended:

http://www.nesfa.org/press/Books/Russell-1.html

And read the story "Allamagoosa" if you have not read it yet.

I'll never forget the collection, "Men, Martians and Machines."

A genius at combining SF adventure with humor.

If I lived in the U.S., especially where I used to live for 10 years (Cincinnati, OH), I could easily find a copy at Half-Price Books and I would just mail it to you. Unfortunately, here in Peru, the few books they have in English is not much of anything. (Because I'm a book collector, this is probably the thing I most miss about being in the U.S.)

I do own a copy, but it's in storage in some box back in the U.S. I have over 100 boxes of books in a climate-controlled environment, but which one of those boxes, I have no idea.

Anyway, the collection consists of these four linked novelettes, featuring Jay Score, so it's possible - because you are already a Russell fan - that you've read them:

• Jay Score. 1941
• Mechanistria
• Symbiotica
• Mesmerica

Would we be allowed to post it here? Or is it only legal on that site? I've cleaned up a .TXT copy for myself (will have to re-read it to be sure it's really clean). I hadn't seen this before, and it's a great story!

The book Men, Martians and Machines was originally published in 1955, but the stories were published from the 40s.

IANAL, but ... Even though it appears that this was originally published in the US and apparently not renewed, the 1978 copyright act might have restored the copyright because of Russell's UK citizenship. Even in the Life+50 countries, his work would not be PD until 2029.

Man, that website is strait out of the 50's 90's.

If you want another format, you could try asking the site owner and/or the estate if they would put up something for download. They might agree if there is an expressed desire. Worst that could happen is they say no.
