Can Microsoft run an antispyware product without huge conflicts of interest?

Joel on software is a brilliant blog written by a SW developer. Although it is focused on SW (doh!) his posts are interesting for people not really into SW business. Take for example his post on the conflicts of interest that might arise in MS's search for spyware in your computer.
