Camping/outdoor usage and cold
Morning all. Reporting to you from a break in my camping trip, where I've had really crazy experiences with my Clara. I've had it about a year, love the thing, and at home it maintains an insane charge forever (I keep light on at 2% for reading at night in the dark).
I recently charged it to 100%, then took it camping. Temps dropped to 45 - turned it on to read (it was in my bag, in a pouch) and it was at 3%, and the time was totally off! I then read a little inside the sleeping bag, it warmed up, I turned it off and the time was back to normal... But the battery had drained. I charged it on a portable battery, then the next night, temps were only 60 - nothing happened. The following night - temps 55 - happened again! I've done a few cursory searches but haven't found anything really about this (apologies if I've missed it). Do people have experiences like this? Is it just mine, or this is how e-readers are (my smartphone has no such experience)? I love the e-reader for how I can bring multiple books, and as someone who will go on 7+ day camping trips, this pattern is really disturbing. Thanks for all your insights! |

Cold may indeed wreak havoc on battery chemistry. That feels a wee bit drastic though, unless something broke suspend (i.e., if it's setup for the smart cover, and magnets are involved).
Or, it's just the gauge being extra wonky, which is not that uncommon either. |

No magnets (I dont have a smart cover) and the fact that the clock moved around really makes me think the whole thing got wonky, and the new 1% charge is still 99%, just says 1%. But not sure how to overcome that.

Note that not using a Smart Cover and actually having *disabled* the Smart Cover setting are two different things ^^.
(IIRC, it's hidden in the Reading or Power Saving options? And It's called "Disable smart cover accessory" or something). |
