Question Cover for images or other file formats?

Hi all,

some of my documents are scanned in jpeg or jpg format. I was wondering if there is a way for Calibre to generate automatically previews for image files or other file formats. Since one can set previews manually for gif, png, jpeg and jpg formats why Calibre is not able to do this at least for these formats automatically?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I have no idea what you are talking about. What's a preview? You mean extracting a cover? If so covers are extracted only from known ebook formats. JPEG/GIF/pNG are not a known ebook format. If you bundle up you image files into a CBZ, then calibre will be able to extract a cover from it.

@excaliber - if you are you trying to use calibre to manage a library of individual images, then maybe this plugin can help ==>> Media File Importer

The author created the plugin for precisely that purpose.

@Kovid: thanks for your response and your tip!
Yes, I mean covers. OK, I couldn't find a way to bundle up my image files into a .cbz file but If I compress them into a .rar file and then import them into Calibre then Calibre generates a cover.

@BetterRed: thanks for your response and your tip! I'm now testing the Media File Importer plugin.

My intention is to use Calibre also for other documents, not only for books. I find the 'Cover Grid' and 'Cover Browser' very helpful for this purpose. But Calibre since it's not meant for this purpose does not generate thumbnails (covers) for all documents. After some time I have finally found a way to solve my problem by using a script and generate thumbnails for all of my documents. This also solves an issue I had with some of my books which were in .doc or .docx format, namely Calibre setting the cover from the first image it finds and not from the first page of the book.
