A case with storage
Hi all,
I'm a very happy Kindle Keyboard user of many years at this point. But circumstances have been created where it would be a good idea for me to acquire a Paperwhite. I'm from Canada, so it will be international and won't have any special offers. No issues so far. But I also need a case that can do two things. [1] Withstand me reading while sitting at an inclined angle. So what I need to resolve this is something fairly light, since I'll be trying to hold it while leaned very far back. [2] I need some storage. I normally carry all my medical documents IN my Kindle Case. I spend more time than most in hospital and doctor's offices waiting rooms --ergo, the Kindle-- and I need to produce copies of various medical pages, usually folded into 4.25x5.5 little packets. They are great timesavers. So, I carry them around in my Kindle, along with Health Card, receipts, coupons, etc. The normal stuff a lady would shove in a purse or a gentleman into a suit pocket. Happily, I don't own a suit. So, anybody out there willing to recommend a lightweight case for a Paperwhite with a little paper storage area in the case opposite the Kindle itself? Price is always an issue, but I'm less sensitive than most. But the price has to mean, in my hands in Canada, in case of foreign alternative suggestions. Thanks for helping, GM |

Can you clarify that the size you specified is in cm? I assume it is, with you being in Canada, but it's always best to check these things.

I'm old. I still haven't had the American system fatigued out of my system yet [G]. The case has to accommodate the kindle which would fit into some sort of holder for 16.9 cm x 11.7 cm. Now, as for the size of the actual case, I'm open to anything reasonable. Something originally purposed for a 7in tablet that has some storage but that would still hold the Kindle securely would work. Maybe even the 8.9in size for the Fire tablet. But the requirements remain: some storage for paperwork and a health card, plus securely holding the Kindle Paperwhite.
Thanks for taking interest in the query. GM |

is auto sleep/auto wake a requirement.
if not, then any 7 inch tablet + documents holder could work & there will be lots of choice but for auto sleep/wake, I guess you'll need one that knows where the PW switches are e.g. I recall having a zipped travel case for the original Kobo reader which had the kobo secured by straps on the right and lots of document storage on the left. but with that sort of design you'd take the reader out of it's case to actually read on it. also, for reading with cover still attached, I like a cover that folds back 180 degrees, but I can't see that working if you have documents slotted in, as in effect you'd be turning that docs storage bit inside out, with risk of loss. |

You might want to think about getting a cover without document storage made for the PW and then using a slightly larger tablet case that you can set the kindle and the documents you need to carry both into. Just a thought.

This isn't what you asked for, but it might be worth considering. I just a week ago picked up a cute case, designed for a 13" laptop, to carry my planner for all my medical appointments, a pen or two, AND my kindle. I think it's cool looking. My kindle is in it's own light weight case. The documents would stay in this Briefcase while I lift the Kindle to reading position.
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B...ilpage_o02_s00 Of course, you can then choose the mini-briefcase that you like. bgDeb |

Nah, I'm perfectly willing to turn on the switch myself. The Kindle Keyboard has me well trained [G]. The issue with any holder is, indeed, access to switches. In my dreams, I would have a 9x7 case with a holder for the KPW on the right with a credit card holder above that would hold my health card. The left side would have pocket(s) for written dox. I score points with my (new) doctors by providing them with complete meds and issues dox at each meeting and it's ALWAYS good to get smiles from people trying to keep you alive. the reason, I do want something CLOSE to the PW KK size (which is larger than the PW, if I remember correctly, is that I want something I can handle in one-handed format. i.e., with the case pulled back upon itself with maybe a u-turned magnetic clasp. The two-buck special I use with the KK does that. Makes the waiting rooms simply someplace for me to continue my reading habit. GM Last edited by Gary_M_Mugford; 06-05-2015 at 02:30 AM. |

See my response to Cybmole. You are, indeed, describing in general what I am looking for. If you or anybody else has something spot on, it would be greatly appreciated. There's SOOOOO much noise out there for the searches that I've performed, that I'm sure I'm missing the exact solution. GM (Still hopeful) |

You are also in the right general area. The case you linked to doesn't, I believe, unzip completely around the spine, making it more of a briefcase than a case in the general shape I'm looking for. Might me a tad big. But your thinking is trending in the right direction. Remember, I'm the laziest man alive, so weight and overall size DOES have some play here. I would like a solution that DOES allow me to operate the PW single-handed. It'll be enough of a cultural shock not having side buttons as it is. My Mom has no issues with the swipe/tap on her PW. But old habits DO conflict. In fact, I'd be going Voyager if I didn't believe the sensor tech on it is still version 1 and I'd rather buy in a version or two down the road. The security of a zip wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have. I've spilled out all the paperwork once in the last two or three years, so it's not a constant problem. But I certainly wouldn't hate having a zippered pouch as compared to one without. Thanks for helping, GM |

I'd recommend voyage as it is even lighter than PW. I ignore the page buttons, I have tendonitis issues and even on lightest setting I don't like having to move thumb around and press, but it is very easy to read one handed as you can tap pretty much anywhere except left screen edge to page forward. or you can swipe.
I bought one of the £10 pseudo-leather covers which does the auto sleep trick and which folds right back for one handed reading ps I googled kindle and documents holder and 1st hit was this cheapie for PW. apologies if it has been linked to already: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazon-Kindl.../dp/B00S4LJ6QG and a picture of the document storage bit http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...L._SL1200_.jpg |

A. Get the smallest lightest cover for the Kindle you can.
B. Then get a slender attache case or a larger briefcase, depending on how much stuff you need to carry. C. Since you don't want a suit with pockets, buy the baggy cargo pants with huge side pockets and a vest loaded with pockets. The vests often have a large pounch in the back so you could carry a few sandwiches, too. A kindle cover is not intended to replace a suit, an attache case, or a wheelie suitcase. |

![]() But if we are doing off-the-wall solutions, how about we skip the clothes with many pockets thing and just: scan all those cards & medical docs & use send to kindle or sideload to kindle so that they exist as documents on device. Then you just show them on-screen, whenever needed. ( though I expect medics are fussy and what to handle the actual paper versions ) actually I think that £6 cover + docs holder that I linked to previously hits the spot pretty well |

Pretty much on target ... until I read the line in the British Amazon site that there is no delivery in Canada. That said, the document stash on the left side of the case is about the minimum that I would be looking for the job. I'm GUESSING that I wouldn't have much luck over-stuffing the cover. Thanks, GM |

With you on the cargo pants. Only pants I wear these days. And since I'm self-employed and work from home with long-standing clients, each of which I've supported for more than 15 years at this point, I'm allowed the luxury of owning a single suit that only comes out at weddings. (And there aren't many of those happening at my age, these days ![]() Cybmole found a British product that is in the proximity of the needed solution. I'm also looking, through another friend, at a case that isn't Kindle specific, but has the desired dimensions, a hard rim and some structured left-hand storage. I would buy a very cheap case for the PW, cut off the left half and then velcro the remaining bits into this case that my pal THINKS he saw in Office Depot. Not MUCH of a DIY'er, but I see potential in his solution path. Thanks for the sartorial advice. Great minds think alike, GM ![]() |

". . .while sitting at an inclined angle." Wow. That's got to be uncomfortable, unless you mean reclined angle. Anyway, why not scan your documents and carry them around in the Kindle itself. This is fairly easy to do, especially using a manager like Calibre. The Kindle will display documents in PDF or Word format, etc. Even better, I think, is what I do for my medical appointments: I reluctantly leave my Kindle (Voyage) at home, and just bring my iPad Mini. It's like a Swiss Army Knife for doctor's visits. It has a nice case to protect it, a calendar app for easy scheduling of follow-up appointments, documents with my lists of Meds, previous surgeries, Doctor's phone numbers and all the other info that medical offices often want, as well as scans of insurance and various identification cards; it also allows me to record my conversations with the doctors and the staff so I can make accurate notes later if I need them (start the recorder, turn the screen off, and it keeps recording while it sits on the table). This way I just bring one device with me; so that I can read while waiting, I keep an ePub copy of my current books in Marvin (easy downloading from Dropbox, but you can use any reader, as Marvin costs a few dollars). And you can check your email and read the morning fishwrap as well. I much prefer to read on the Kindle, of course, but the iPad mini puts everything into one nice package, and I can also show everybody photos of my extraordinarily cute granddaughters whenever the occasion arises. Boy do the nurses love that! With the iPad mini I seldom need to carry along paper docs, but that's not usually required since all of my boilerplate medical info can be popped up on the screen in an instant, and emailed or texted to the doctor's office in the unlikely event they want a paper copy. If I have to carry along a few pages of paper, I just stick them in a file folder and it's no problem. If you are big and strong, you could even use an iPad regular size, but I find them too big for my purposes, and too big to use as a reader. Third method, and the least expensive: just put your Kindle and your documents into one of the many canvas bags with handles you surely have lying around the house, don't refer to it a purse, throw in a small bottle of water and a few pop tarts, and you are set for the day. Don't forget the photos of the kids. |
