can anyone recommend a good medical dictionary
for my Paperwhite? now that I've got the JBPatch working (thanks, ixtab for your wonderful work!), I'm reading a book about neurology and neuroanatomy, and find that a good medical dictionary would be helpful while I'm reading it.

Stedman's or Taber's are usually considered the best but I don't know what if any editions are available for Kindle. I am sure they have apps for android, ios, and windows. There are a lot of free on-line resources though. You can google a definition fairly easily and there are multiple free medical dictionary sites available. I usually prefer to read medical articles or medical texts on my ipad or laptop so I can easily access other resources and the illustrations, pictures, mri's, x-ray films are easier to see.

Taber's is, but it's $30 for the kindle version. I think I'll cope without it.

Actually, that's not a bad price for an e-version of Taber's if it is interactive and has all the supplements.
Just out of curiosity, what book are you reading? There was a free book a while back that was interesting with "pretty pictures" (Pictures of the Mind: What the New Neuroscience Tells Us About Who We Are). |

Connectome: How the Brain's Wiring Makes Us Who We Are, by Sebastian Seung. It's some 500+ pages, and fairly dense even though it's written for a lay audience.
<rushes off to get Pictures of the Mind> <oops, maybe not - too expensive. Oh, well. I'll put it on my wish list and see whether it goes down in price.> |

Though I agree that $30 is quite reasonable for a medical dictionary, Mosby's Dictionary of Medicine is available for Kindle for $19.22 (in Australia). This may be within your acceptable price range. I personally vouch for this dictionary as I use it for university.

I agree; my university is currently looking into starting a medical school and I'm reviwing textbooks and dictionaries covering medical English for possible use. The prices for dictionaries can be even higher than that.

Even $19 is steep for reading one book. If I was a student, that would be a different matter, but I'm reading these books for my own curiosity.

Amazon just informed me that I bought Pictures of the Mind when it was free. and, yeah, there it was in Calibre, filed under Biology instead of Neuroscience. thanks for reminding me of this book.
