Hard to say if it's true. There have been rumors of a Kindle phone for a couple of years now, nothing so far.

Why would Amazon sell a phone. The whole idea of an Amazon product is to get you to the Amazon store to buy stuff. The Kindle is a way to get you to buy books from Amazon. They have the Amazon app store and selling apps is where the money is not selling phones.

Theoretically, it might come along with the launch of an Amazon com network, or a strategic partnership with a network provider, perhaps, say, the one that provided the 3G to the Kindles....

AT&T provides 3G for the Kindles. You really have to ask how would an Amazon phone get people into the Amazon store?

Not sure about that. Phones are at core utilitarian; you carry one for communications first and foremost. Amazon already gets a lot of traffic off eveybody else's phones so the question comes down to the *incremental* gains the branded phone might bring. FIRE works as a reputable low-to-mid price entry, slotted below the premium android tablets and the iPads into a niche that was wide open and begging for somebody to jump in. But phones? Apple is already mining the high-end; Android and Nokia have saturated the low-end. Where is the "Spark" going to fit in? Free? |

However I appear to be in the minority. The majority seems to be paying wacky amounts of money for tiny tablets and data plans. Anyway, my comment was spawned by my hatred of most cell providers and I'm HOPING Amazon might give me an alternative. | |

(shrug) Beats "ember". Or Blaze: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/04...leak-pictures/ I've said it before: I can more easily see an Amazon STB than an Amazon smartphone. Something along the likes of a Roku/Popcorn Hour type box. |

next: fit in pocket four inch version of Fire: low cost and wireless ready. people love kindle brand. From article: "Amazon’s Kindle Fire now makes up the absolute majority of the Android tablet platform in the US, comScore found in a fresh study. The e-reader and tablet crossover represented 54.4 percent of all Android tablets sold in the country. At second place, the entire Samsung Galaxy Tab lineup comprised just 15.4 percent of Android slates. No other manufacturer got above 10 percent" |

It's actually more impressive than that: they're measuring *installed base*, not sales rate. They outsold the field in less than 6 months. Their sales rate is lower than iPad but still comparable; around 10 million a year. Easy to see that the tablet market is new and also pretty clear evidence the market was waiting for something like FIRE. I may be wrong but, I just don't think the Phone market is either immature or clamoring for an Amazon phone. |
