PRS-505 keeps restarting when reading SD card
I've had my 505 for nearly two years and it has worked flawlessly. Installed PRS Customizer about two weeks after I bought it, and have had no problems...until three weeks ago.
I don't use the Sony software on my PC, just attach the 505 and let it (and the 1 gb SD card I have in the reader) appear as drives on my computer (running XP, service pack 3). SD card has about 360mb of files on it, reader only 25mb. A few weeks ago after transferring several books to the SD card, once I disconnected the 505 from the PC the reader (as usual) began reading the SD card, then abruptly restarted. Start-up proceeded fine, but when it tried to read the card, the same re-start process began again. If at any point in the restarting process I remove the SD card, the problem disappears -- the reader starts up just fine. I suspected a bad card, so I tried the following (all to no avail): 1. Copy SD card files to PC, reformat card, copy files back onto card, re-insert into reader, re-start. 2. Copy SD card files to different card (1 gb memory memory stick), re-insert, re-start. 3. Remove from SD card (in cache folder) any .xml files, reinsert, restart. 4. Remove "Sony Reader" folder, and "Digital Editions" folders from card, re-insert, re-start. (Just trying to eliminate any reader-generated files). In each case, the same behavior occurred; the reader would restart (i.e. show the "Reader Starting up..." screen, then after 30 seconds move the Reader Main Menu screen, then try to read the memory card (SD or memory stick) and then restart and begin again). At this point (about 3 weeks ago) while I was trying all this, the problem stopped and things have been fine until tonight, when it appeared again and won't quit. This time I grabbed an old 128mb card, copied a four books over to it, and tried that...and it worked just fine (read the card and the books on it). That led me to think some file on my original 1gb card had gotten corrupted, so I removed the card, and copied another 23 books to it, reinserted it...and the restart problem began again. And again, removing the card caused the problem to stop... None of the books I copied to the new card were books I have downloaded in the past month, so I don't think it's a recently acquired corrupted file. Suggestions on how to proceed? Oh, the reader is fully charged (plug-in charger used). Thanks in advance... |

An update
Turns out when I copied the 27 books to the 128 mb card, I did include one epub I had downloaded that day (when problems again arose). I removed that epub, inserted it in the reader, and voila, no problems.
But when I removed that epub from the original 1 gb card and re-inserted the card, same problem (looping restart). I'll keep at it... |

Hmm...well, the same behavior re-appeared a few weeks later, and my only workaround has been to stop using ANY sd card at all, and loading/unloading books to the internal memory. Every card I use elicits the same behavior...

This is happening to me too now. There is one epub on my SD card that I was able to open a few days ago, but now it is causing my reader to restart. I've tried formatting the internal memory and moving it to there and then accessing it, but it is still causing the reader to restart.
Other books on my SD card do not cause any problems..weird! |

Had the same problem. I use Calibre Library and Sony PRS-505. Suddenly, PRS-505 wouldn't read new ebooks or ebooks from memory card. Even ones that worked fine before. At first just wouldn't load memory cards, then started resetting itself over and over again, when new books are loaded. After trying everything "usual" (that off course didn't work) I found that only one book still works fine. Hour of trying to find how is it different from others, and bingo! Have no idea why that makes a difference, but this book had no cover. So I deleted all books from internal memory and memory card, formatted internal memory/memory card, hard reset device and finally deleted all covers on my Calibre. Downloaded books back and everything works fine. Have no idea why. Books that always worked just fine, but didn't work with the cover after problems started, were fine again. At least it works now, but may be just temporary, will have to wait and see. Hopefully it helps someone.
