New Authors

What new authors have you enjoyed reading? Where a new author is someone who has published his/her first novel in the previous twelve months.

The only new author I have read recently is Harry Connolly (Child of Fire, Game of Cages), fantasy/adventure, which I really liked. I read mostly dark fantasy, and I really don't care if author is new or not. Just read Midwinter by Matthew Sturges- also fantasy, good read.

BALZAC OF THE BADLANDS by Steve Finbow -- brilliantly written post-modern crime novel
THE LONGSHOT by Katie Kitamura -- Hemingwayesque debut about a mixed marital arts fight
MIXED BLOOD by Roger Smith -- hardhitting South African noir
THE COLD KISS by John Rector -- A suspenseful winter's noir tale. Cross between THE GETAWAY and A SIMPLE PLAN
ACTS OF VIOLENCE by Ryan David Jahn -- masterclass in characterisation based on a horrific real-life crime from the 60s

I don't usually read suspense, but this one is great (I understand the author is now writing a sequel - yay!):

Last Exit in New Jersey

Available only as an ebook (at Amazon and Smashwords)

Micheal J. Sullivan. He might have been published earlier, but he is more of an indie author. He is amazing though. His series is an epic fantasy that is heavy on the action/adventure aspect. His ebooks are very well priced if you go to his webiste. They are available for the Nook and Kindle too.

Kimberly Derting is a new author that I just love. She writes a young adult paranormal series about a girl that sees/hears echos from the dead and ends up helping to find a serial killer.

Feed by Mira Grant was pretty good. I had some issues with the story (too much focus on blogging), but overall I really enjoyed it. Technically "Mira Grant" is the pen name of Seanan McGuire (sp?), so she's published before, but this is my first experience with any of her work, and her first publication as Mira Grant.

Bitter Seeds by Ian Tregillis. Another decent read, though I was disappointed that the book felt like one big set-up to a bigger book. Essentially it read like an over-long prologue.

Nathan Lowell, while an old hand at Podcast publishing. is new to ebook and pbook publishing. His first book Quarter Share has remained in the Amazon top 20 bestselling Sci-Fi ebooks since it's release in April and the second of a planned 6 books, Half Share, is out as of the day before yesterday.

Really good non-violent Science Fiction, something that hasn't been seen in a while.

These are available at Amazon and Smashwords.

I just finished Shard Mountain (Joe Mitchell), Portal (Imogen Rose), and Kismet's Kiss (Cate Rowan), three great books in three very different genres, all first books published this year.

I read Bitter Seeds a few weeks ago- agree it seemed to be setting up for another book- but that's OK with me. I thought it was quite good, I loved the evil female character. The blitz scenes reminded me a bit of Connie Willis' Blackout, a book I loved.

I enjoyed the first two books of David Dalglish's half-orc series (The Weight of Blood is the first one, I believe.)

J.M. Pierce's "Duality" is a really good book that I would recommend.
