Calibre - calibre

Non-technical issue

After a year of using calibre, I found myself today in a kind of strange situation.

I've until now, only referred to calibre in writing -mostly in forums - but I was talking with a co-worker today - a book buff, as myself - and I recommended him calibre. Well, suddenly I didn't know how to pronounce it. Is it:

a) like the US caliber? or
b) more like the spanish calibre - like hombre?

And, by the way, what would be the right way to write it?

a) calibre
b) Calibre

Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't know these answers but if not, probably a good idea to get this settled once and for all.

See here. Kovid says:
"calibre is pronounced as cal-i-ber not ca-li-bre. If you’re wondering, calibre is the British/commonwealth spelling for caliber. Being Indian, that’s the natural spelling for me."

Kovid seems to use "calibre" most of the time (e.g., see above), and that's what I try to use, but I'm not consistent. There have been offers to take up a collection so he can afford the capital letter.

OK, so that's settled.

Somehow I like calibre better than Calibre but that's for Kovid to decide and I think it's important from a branding point of view.

I prefer lowercase, comes from the command line invocation of calibre.

The middle syllable rhymes with "eye" rather than "bib"?
Which syllable is the emphasis on when saying it, the second?

I took it as the middle syllable rhymes with "bib" not "eye" and the emphasis is on the first syllable, like halibut or Malibu California are pronounced.

I'm unsure why your quoting unboggling, he is saying the exact same thing you are saying for pronunciation and the same as Starson17 says in post 2 and the same way Kovid pronounces it in the videos.

Quote:
cal·i·ber noun \ˈka-lə-bər, British also kə-ˈlē-\

Definition of CALIBER

1 a : degree of mental capacity or moral quality b : degree of excellence or importance

2 a : the diameter of a bullet or other projectile b : the diameter of a bore of a gun usually expressed in hundredths or thousandths of an inch and typically written as a decimal fraction <.32 caliber>

3 : the diameter of a round or cylindrical body; especially : the internal diameter of a hollow cylinder
