Noticing change in metadata

If I add a book to the Calibre library from my Kindle which has a title of the form "Foo (Bar book #2)" or some such and then I download metadata, the title in the library will then often change to just "Foo". I actually prefer that, but the complication is that it leads to becoming detached from the copy in the Kindle.

Now, I don't mind particularly going into Device and doing the match to reconnect it, but it doesn't seem to always notice in the same session that it is no longer connected. Sometimes it is only disconnected in the next session, which makes me unsure what has happened. Is there a procedure to make sure this connection is remade in the current session?

Also, I would like to push the shorter title to the Kindle since the long titles wipe out the author name when scrolling through. Is there any way to do that short of deleting the book from the Kindle and re-adding it (which loses categories and such)?

If you make any change that changes the filename (as sent) or Author/title, the likelihood of a 'disconnect' from the previous copy is almost assured. Differences = New

Well, yes, I get that ... the question is how to manage it. Personally, I prefer the plain title without the subtitles scrolling through in the Kindle. So, is there a way to push the downloaded title to the Kindle without deleting and re-adding (which I don't want to do since it will lose the category and possibly the date)? And, if I am going to leave it alone in the Kindle, what do I do about the fact that it doesn't always notice the disconnect until the next session?

In order to change the metadata of a book currently on the Kindle, you MUST send an updated copy to the Kindle.

Delete the old on first

or you may end up with two copies if the save template is dependent on something that just changed.

My unread books in the Kindle are sorted by date of acquisition. If I delete and add, isn't the book then going to pop to the head of the queue?

Yes, but there is no getting around that - you cannot modify or update or replace a book without it getting bumped to the head of the queue.

As far as the Kindle knows, you just added it for the first time.
