I am looking for a 8.5x11 inch reader for tech manuals.
Wifi and touch not required. Storage is. Do such devices exist ? Costs ? Links ? Thanks ! |

I don't have any specific company in mind. But where I work wifi is controlled... So having an ereader with wifi wouldn't be allowed.
I'm just looking for information. I have no idea what is available in this size. |

At IFA Berlin there has been a few reader announced with target date october/november.
Search for PocketBook 902/903, DR-900 and some more (can't remember get, saved a list on the other computer). Personally i'm interested in the 902/903. |

On most devises you have to choose to enable wifi. Thus, while it isn't enabled you would be free to use it. At least that is the case with my iPad. When I'm reading I never have the wifi on. I think you would be able to do the same with the Kindle DX.

from the reviews, the dr-900 is going to be about $421.
The one site that seemed to have a price for the 902 had it blocked by an ad. Looks nice, but outside my price range. |

Hmm... i have looked a bit more, and I think I can live with a 7 inch screen, if the device covers pdf, html, plain text, epub, and as many more as a particular device covers.
My maximum would be $250. I would like it to be expandable up to 16 gig SD cards. The reviews I have read of various devices don't make me feel good about 32 gig SD card coverage. wifi isn't necessary, but I'll take it if the device otherwise fits what I want. Touch screen not necessary, I prefer not to have it. I don't want it tied to a particular company, and I'm not interested in Astak devices. Thank you for your help. |

You mignt want to check out Innoversal Papyrus (8"), will be released in October, at around $300.
http://www.innoversal.com.tw/en-us/p...s/papyrus.aspx. However, I find reading academic articles (two or more columns) even on 9.7 screen rather difficult. They usually don't reflow very well and I often get some strange symbols. Pocketbook 902 will be around $300, I think. But Innoversal will enable you to annotate, and PB902 won't. |

Thanks !
I don't know if annotating is necessary for me. It might or might not come in handy. I may get a larger one just as a change from my current device. |

Add me to the list of folks who'd like to have a large reader. An 8.5x11 would work well for my tech manuals, schematics, etc. I've looked at tablets, but the fade in sunlight renders them almost useless for my application.

But give it a few months and we'll see what evolves. I am hopeful I might still be around when the finally reach the market, and there is a market especially for reference manuals in many areas. I suspect we'll see a few in monochrome then won't see much movement until we have color and flexible color because large panels need very sturdy frames and cases, Mg Alloy with stainless steel frame as a minimum to prevent screen torque which is one of the more common causes of death of current EPD panels. However they will be out just not right away and not in color unless you can live with a 12" tablet/slate PC type device which I am very sure we will see in the first half of 2011...problem is the OS and getting the content for the device...as in ADE/PDF/EPUB and the ability to run some version of Kindle reader software. Because the mfg's have been very lazy at developing a viable slate PC OS we have not seen these devices a decade ago when they should have begun evolving into the PADD device many of us expected by now. Add to that the bull-crap politics of the format battles and the technology is sort of stalled out right now because why do the R&D if the sort of users who would be drawn to such a device find it too limiting in terms of content restrictions because of licensing terms for the competing API's. |
