I won! Now, what do I buy?

First the good news: I won a $10.00 gift certificate to Houston's premiere mystery bookstore, Mystery by the Book, by being this month's chosen commenter on the Killer Characters blog.

Now for the bad news: They don't do ebooks.

They also don't, apparently, have a shopping cart setup on their site, to use the gift certificate I have to call them.

What can I get that's not an ebook? The only thing I can think of is to call them and see if some of their gift type merchandise is allowable with this gift certificate, (like a tshirt, maybe? I'll end up getting it for maybe half off that way), or get something that's not available in ebook, and not likely to be in the near future.

Any other ideas?

That's a tough one, Shel.
Without knowing what is available beyond t-shirts, I would think there must be a pbook you've always wanted, perhaps priced a little out of your comfort zone.

Yeah, I was thinking along those lines as well, Recluse, which is why I posted this in the "reading recommendations" section. However, I'm drawing a blank as to something that isn't available in ebook and isn't likely to be available in ebook that I just can't live without. A cookbook maybe? Those don't translate well to ebook, at least not the ones with the luscious color photos...
As to "priced out of my comfort zone" I nearly had sticker shock the last time I bought a paperback - $14.99!! And it wasn't even trade paperback sized!

Well, I know that we don't share similar tastes in books, so anything I suggest along those lines would be a waste of time. If you don't have an author or book in mind that you haven't been able to get in ebook, my best suggestion would be to go browse the inventory. Maybe some forgotten treasure will jump out at you.
The same goes for cookbooks.

Congrats Shel!

I would first decide what type of mystery story you like. Then ask the manager for a recommendation of an author or two.

I downloaded a free short story during Read an eBook Week that I enjoyed very much called East Village Noir by Russell Atwood. As I recall, he has written two novels. Perhaps your store carries his books.

Well, now therein lies the rub. There's no way to browse the inventory online, there is no online store. To redeem this, I'm going to have to call them. And I'm still drawing a blank for a book I've been unable to get in ebook that I don't think will come out sooner or later.

Hey GA...well, what I like is easy. Cozies and urban fantasy. The problem comes in when I try to choose one that I don't either already have in ebook, or won't be available in ebook in a time frame I can live with. That leaves me with old stuff that they're probably not going to have anyway. Thanks for the congrats .

Try browsing through a local mystery book store, or one that is online for ideas.

I could swear I read somewhere recently about a book called something like 'How to Get the Best Out of Your eBook-Dedicated Reader' ... that was available only in paperback. Good luck. Neil
