Sony PRS 300 Help please

Hi
Please can anyone help me. I had downloaded the kindle software and then purchased a couple of books from Amazon plus a free book. I then decided to but an e reader and purchased the Sony PRS 300 three days ago. I have been banging my head against the wall ever since. The device was the last one-n display. After charging I opened the book to find what I believe were German books on it. I tried to register it on Sony and it said I had the wrong number[I hadnt] or it had already been registered. On reading the help section it says something regarding Adobe ID , we have tried to do this but the reader says on the 'About' section we are not authorised to do this. We are going round and round in circles. I have a library with nothing showing on it , today I downloaded some free books from Sony. I can see these in the library in 'computer' I can read them on my comp. I cannot drag and drop them . I cannot put them on my reader. The reader has a usb sign in the middle of the screen and a circle with a line through it. Should I take this back ? Should I try to get a Kindle ? Can I get this to work and is it any good once working ? Im moving to Australia on Tuesday for 7 months can I download books for the sony there ? Should I get my money back and get something different ?
Many Thanks
Val

I'm not sure I can help on all of your problems, because I have not experienced your issues but a few pointers are:

1. I understand some Sony 300s are shipped with some German language sample books on them, so don't worry about that.

2. Are you using a pc or a Mac? I ask simply because I had problems authorising my 300 with ADE (Adobe Digital Editions) using a MAC.

3. You refer to buying books from Amazon. I don't mean to offend, but you do realise Amazon books are sold in formats which are not compatible with a Sony without conversion first (and stripping out any drm protection they may have been sold with)?

4. Free books purchased from Sony do not need you to authorise the reader with Adobe. So, how are you trying to put them on your reader? Are you using the Sony Library software?

Sorry for all the questions, but a little more info may help those far more knowledgeable than I on this forum.

You can certainly buy and download books from the Sony book store in Australia but the selection of books available to you could be different from your home country.

If you want to register yourself with the store using your home address you'll be able to purchase books available for your country. If you have a credit card with a billing address in your country it should be no problem to make purchases. If not, I'd suggest buying a Sony Store gift card before you leave for Australia and using that to top up your account credit.

The circle with a line through it and the USB symbol is normal when the reader is plugged into your computer: it should go away when you unplug the usb cable from your reader.
