After wading through all the glowing marketspeak, I noticed that not one time was the Android Marketplace mentioned.

There are devices -- particularly the larger 6-7-8-9 inch devices that do not yet have access to the Market because the apps are all for smaller-screened devices. At least that is my understanding.

My point was that the hype touted:

It didn't say a thing about the hassle involved with finding APKs without access to the Market, then having to manually install them, yada-yada-yada. Implying that it was as easy as doing it on a phone, while knowing full well that Google has not opened the Market to tablet devices.

Their credibility is suffering a little in my view.

Just ran across this in "the Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development"

A Guaranteed Market

"As mentioned in the introduction to the chapter, Android is open source. Specifically, it is mostly available under the Apache Software License 2.0. This license places few restrictions on device manufacturers. Therefore, it is very possible for a device manufacturer to create a device that, frankly, does not run Android very well. It might work fine for standard applications shipped on the device but do a poor job of handling third-party applications, like the ones you might write.

To help address this, Google has some applications, such as the Android Market, that it has not released as open source. While these applications are available to device manufacturers, the devices that run the Android Market are tested first, to help ensure that a user's experience with the device will be reasonable.

A Google engineer cited one case where a device manufacturer was readying a phone that had a QVGA screen, before the release of Android 1.6 where QVGA support was officially added to the platform. While that manufacturer had arranged for the built-in applications to work acceptably on the smaller-resolution screen, third party applications were a mess. Google apparently declined to provide the Android Market to the manufacturer for this device.

Hence, the existence of the Android Market on a device, beyond providing a distribution means for your applications, also serves as a bit of a "seal of approval" that the device should support well-written third-party applications."

The A7 has Android 2.2 as the OS, a 7-inch screen, and has 512MB of DDR2 RAM. Other features include NVIDIA Tegra II T-20 processor with a 1MB L2 cache, 4GB of internal flash storage, and a 1.3MP camera. The device also has 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, 1080p HDMI output, and a USB 2.0 port.

What hassle? I've been able to find any apk I've wanted within a few minutes with a Google search.

Installing an apk takes about 30 seconds if you use an app manager or app installation program. Big deal.

Your right, it's not a big deal for you or me, who are a little technically inclined, but for the cupholder/anykey set, it is a big deal.
