Tried Looking at a Nook
in BB yesterday and today while contemplating a computer for son who's a college freshman.
I couldn't get out of the starting gate. Yesterday's store two devices were locked up and the gal couldn't get them restarted, and today's was stuck on a start up screen. Not a good advertisement for the Nook where I'm concerned. What I was wondering, is how fluid is the page turning in one of these devices? The Kobo seemed slow and choppy when turning the page. (This is an interesting experience. Two online friends have eReaders and of they are very vocal as to how much they like theirs... one a Nook and one a Kindle. It's good they love their own devices. LOL) Thanks for reading. Julie Last edited by copyrite; 09-09-2010 at 08:04 PM. |

I had a definite learning curve with the Nook in that I was unused to touch screens. But now that I'm good with it I wouldn't go back to a clunky button system. And the page swipe feature of the Nook is GREAT.

I think it's very fluid - but I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that. It sort of flashes as it goes to the next page - the same as any e-reader.
If you're talking speed, it's good. Kindle 3 is of course going to be faster, but besides that from what I've heard the nook is about as fast or faster than the rest, and the nook 2 will hopefully be as fast as the Kindle 3. And I second the page swipe feature. It's awesome! |

Yeah, any e-ink screen will. For the time being, that's the price to pay for a non-backlit screen that resembles a paper page.

also do you have a Barnes and noble in your area? I found the e-readers in the Best Buy by me get virtually no attention or care from the store. The Nook and Sony displays are relugated to an area next to the refridgerators and nobody know anything about them. I see the charging plugs falling out of the devices. The Sony displays are all dusty,
Best Buy can really give two craps about the ereaders, at least the Best Buy in my area and it sounds like your area as well. But yeah if there is a Barnes and Noble near you, you should have a much better experience and to answer your question, I find the nook page turning to be very smooth and fast. and yup eink has the flash, no getting around that |

I checked out a Kobo yesterday and a Nook today. I definitely noticed the delay on the Kobo (about a "one-Missiissippi) but the Nook seemed fine. I definitely second the opinion above: go check a Nook out at a B&N. The two stores near me have display desks right by the front entrance and someone comes over to talk to you as soon as they see you playing with it.

I found the delay with the Nook on display in both B&N and BB. However, that was before they were updated with the 1.4 firmware. So when I bought it I expected a slow page turn but I was pleasantly surprised. The page refresh quickly and smoothly especially when using the finger swiping gesture. I am waiting for the K3 and wonder if I could get back to using buttons to turn pages. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

If you are trying them out go to Target and try the K2. The K3 is rumored to be debuting at target on Sep 12 though.

Am seeing a trip to B&N and Target in my future this weekend! And no problem going back to Target next week... I never need an excuse to go there!
Thanks for the info! Julie |

Must be a standard Best Buy display model. The one here is the same, frozen up and broken and noone knows a thing about them.
At least the Kindle display at Target is better but good luck finding a knowledgeable employee there. |

Of course, the Kindle display unit is easier to deal with because it's not supposed to work.

You would think they'd want the devices to be up and running because it's easier to make a sale that way. LOL

When I did my search, the Target I went to did not have an operational Kindle. It was on some type of wallpaper that flashed to different features of the Kindle on different screens.
I obviously decided on the nook and am happy I did, but who knows, if I had actually been able to try out the Kindle somewhere it might've made my decision even harder. That's a huge plus of the nook to me, you can go right down to B&N anytime you need and get hands-on help, or even call them up with questions and talk to a live person (I called B&N a few times after getting my nook with a random question or two that their nook person happily answered). |
