I'm new to server admin and linux. I upgraded my calibre server today using the command from the calibre website and I broke the server.

If you've moved from Calibre 2.x to Calibre 3.x you'd better read up on the changes.

That's what I'm finding out. But I can't find a source that gives me all the information I need. For instance, I'm in the calibre manual, but I'm thinking I have to update the /etc/calibre/global.py file, but in all my searching no source has mentioned that.

That error does not prevent the server from running, just BonJour from working. It will happen if calibre fails to determine an IP address to advertise via BonJour.

Why is the service usually "inactive"?
![]() As you can see, I clearly don't know what I'm doing. ;-) What do you mean by "setting the environment"? |

And what is the difference between sudo and su?
One (su) allows you to change users by authenticating as the user you are changing to, and the other (sudo) allows you to change users by authenticating as yourself and being granted permission to do so via a sudoers(5) policy. ... And really, you shouldn't be using either one, since systemctl status does not require elevated permissions. If you were enabling or starting the service, that would require elevated permissions, assuming you aren't using systemctl --user to manage a service from your systemd user session. |

Is there a possibility to configure the IP address used for advertisment via Bonjour? Following use-case where this makes sense: Calibre Server is running in a container and therefore the server process has no chance to determine the IP address.

For the content server: Preferences / Sharing over the net / Advanced / The interface on which to listen for connections. For the wireless device: Preferences / Plugins / Device Interface / SmartDevice, Customize plugin, Use this IP address.

The listener IPs are configured correctly, my question is only about the advertisement of the OPDS service via Bonjour. The container runtime forwards the packets from the host IP/Port to the container IP/port . The latter is routed only in the container runtime defined network, therefore the process inside the container sees a wrong IP when looking only at the interfaces it sees locally. This can only be overcome by configuration of the host IP, w/o changing the listener IP.

The above said, I am not convinced that mDNS will ever work from inside the container. The runtime and the outer system must be ready to forward multicast packets. I don't know if they can, but wouldn't be surprised if they won't. |
