Who here is a 399er?
I've noticed a few reviews of the Kindle 3 have mentioned how the new Kindle 3 is a much better value than the Kindle 1. Which might be true but we've gotten years of use out of our K1s already. So, I was wondering how many people here bought the original Kindle at $399.00 and are still using it?
/raises hand. "Hi, I'm Carl and I'm a 399er." I bought my K1 not long after they were announced and have used it diligently since then. I don't think a day has gone by that I haven't at least picked it up and read something from it. |

Moi, though I only use it as my master storage (along with my computer back-up).
It's also my "get out of DRM jail free" Kindle. Since it didn't get the equivalent 2.5 update, it is very easy for me to use a Calibre plug-in to remove all DRM from my Kindle books. No muss, no fuss. ![]() |

I have a K1 but mone was only $369. (grins) I used it for the first time since I got the DXG while at the beach this weekend. I have a waterproof cover for the K1 and not the DXG. I was content reading with the K1 but I do prefer the screen size and colelctions on the DXG.

I got my K1 as a birthday present in Sep 2008. I think the price had come down from $399 to something like $349 by then.

I bought mine on the day after it was released. It's been worth every penny. I also bought one for my husband and one for my sister at the $369 price. I'm so happy to see the price come down. $140 is so much more accessible. It's a price that even readers with fairly low incomes can justify. For folks making a good living, it's practically in impulse buy territory.

I'm a 399er.
I bought mine before I had my first coffee on the morning of the press conference. |

I am one as well. it is actually on loan to a daughter's friend, but I will always keep it because of the SD card. any book I feel worth keeping I will send to it and store it on there. currently my second K1 (when they first dropped the price and were selling the refurbished ones) I have given to my very good friend in New Mexico. the K2 that I had given my FIL and got back after he died I gave to my son after I thought I had lost it and in a fit of panic, ordered another one (I got the souped up K2). I thought about exchanging it for the K3, but I think I will hold out and see what the future brings.

Mine was $399, received in January 2008, but I had a discount ($30??) for getting an Amazon credit card. I love my K1, but I am now getting a K3. Not sure what to do with the K1. Turn it in? So cruel. Save it to loan books to friends? Maybe...

I just sold my two 399-ers in May. With replacement batteries, they were both going strong. My K1 was a second wave (the first batch to go out after the initial sell out) and it never had a hiccup or glitch. I kinda miss the scroll wheel. The little silver streak always made me smile. But with two K2s, a DXG and a K3 on the way, the K1s deserved to find loving homes where they could be appreciated.

The K1 is a great device. I got 18 months solid service from Tavar before moving onto my DXG, Octavian. There are still times when Tavar makes more sense then Octavian. I have no intention of giving him away. He will stay at the house and can be used by visitors. That also means that I have a back up if anything happens to Octavian.
So the $369 or $349 that my Hubby paid for my birthday gift in October of 2008 was well worth every penny. I read happily on Tavar and he continues to be used in my household. |

I have a K1 that I bought in January due to the sell-out over the first Christmas; and yes, I bought it at the full $399 price. I don't list it in my profile because I cannot use it right now -- it suddenly refused to charge. I don't know if it's a bad battery or a bad charger, so I recently broke down and ordered both from Amazon. They are on the way and I'm hoping that they resolve the problem. And even if I never power on the K1 again, I like the idea of keeping it registered at Amazon as my "get out of jail" device.
