Hi,

I'm a writer, and I've mainly joined in order to promote my work, though I enjoy reading as much as I do writing.

I have a Kindle 2, and though it took a little getting used to, I now prefer it to reading on paper.

I'll most likely join in a few of the discussions. I've spent many hours lurking here, mainly on the author promotions thread, which can be quite cruel at times, I've discovered.

I'll have to be careful.

Me too. In fact, I avoid reading paper books now if at all possible. They're often dusty/dirty, they often smell funny, they can be hard to hold, and it's easy to lose your place.

As in any large community, there are a certain percentage of negative, supercilious, confrontational and/or mean-spirited people. I get turned off by them too, especially since one might expect a community of readers to be more enlightened and civil than the average group of people. But most people here are helpful, informative, smart and humorous. So even though I take a break from MR every so often, I eventually come back. Hope things will work out for you here.
