DR800: robustness

Damn Irex, I was inches near to buying a DR800

But - I'm still tempted: there is simply no alternative for that form factor - Kindle DX aside which I do not like.

Of course buying one now I'll be on my own, so a bit of advice please:
how robust are these products - Irex in general and DR800 in particular? Any horror stories you heard about?

thank you for any help...

I'm not sure if they're actually available right now. I don't think BestBuy has them in stock, and from what I heard the DR800S is out of stock at most places in Europe as well.

Also, iRex isn't dead yet. The type of bankruptcy they filed for does not necessarily mean the end of the company (unless something new has happened today that I haven't heard about yet). For example, they've already released an updated RC2 for the 2.0 beta firmware since they declared Chapter 11. It's certainly not good news right now, but they're not at the point of liquidating the company, etc.

pixmania.co.uk are still showing them as available at £430...and you can also buy the IREX cover for £1,173 according to the website!

I dropped mine on the floor of the metro today - nothing happened.

@Alessandro, I guess you are in in Europe, right? There are plenty of places that sell the DR800 apart from the "official" Irex shops. Pixmania in France and several shops in the UK and Germany. The price is just below EUR500.

Luckily for you, IREX is born from its ashes AND will continue to support DR800. DR1000 and iLiad get pretty much screwed.

I do not believe the dr1000 is completely screwed. The new beta firmware for both platforms is built on the same development platform. I running an app that requires de dr1000 uds on th dr800 and it work. The app gives me full screen support and tabbed book reading. Both feature only availble officially on the dr1000.

This binary compatibility leads me to believe that if support for new firmware for the dr800 will continue then it would be trivial to continue dr1000 support. Hardware, i.e. the 10" screen and possibly the battery might be a problem. The wacom pen compatible with the dr1000 should ramin available

Another reason to buy a DR800 (if one's available) is that if it disappoints you, it won't be that hard to sell it again. Even when IREX was in surceance the prices on ebay of marktplaats.nl (Dutch online market place) didn't even drop. I bought mine for €300,- with the white leather cover.....

I'm really happy with my irex which i bought on ebay after the bankruptcy announcement. i use it all the time now with my nook in standby. so far so good. i had one or two times when the reader seemed to sort of hang and rebooting took a few min. but other than that, it's a really lovely form factor. love the page turn lever and folder support, etc.. It was a risk getting one bec i paid a bit more than the US retail price, and the company was in limbo. but no regrets!

I have only two quality problems:

-- The screen has two small, permanent dots near the bottom. They don't real bother me at this time as long as it doesn't spread.
-- The paint is peeling off. Must be due to the extremely high humidity we have.

But in general I love the Irex, for books, newspapers, technical manuals, and note taking. It is small but has quite a big screen and everything works very smoothly. And let us face it, there is just nothing out there now that even comes close to its functionality and still offers the same portability.

DR800. Only complaint I have is that paint is peeling off. Not sure if it is due to high humidity (Bali, Indonesia), like HansTWN is suggesting.
