New electronic edition of my novel ALLIANCES

I'm delighted to announce the publication by Straight Up Press of new electronic and paperback editions of my first novel, ALLIANCES. Originally published by Worldwide Library in 1987, the novel sold 65,000 copies worldwide and was translated into French, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese for foreign editions in Australia, the Philippines, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Brazil and Latin America. The book earned a single review from the now-defunct magazine, Rendezvous:

"The horrors and circumstances during World War II are depicted in this remarkable tale of fear and courage. The story takes you from England to France with a female American war correspondent trying to send the Americans the real story behind the war, and the English people trying to stay alive with all the hardships of bombings and killings. The reader will be hard-pressed to read this without feeling it's more fact than fiction, more fear than sentimentality. This is for both men and women, but not a romance in any sense of the word. Action - yes; conflict - plenty; well-written - absolutely."

Read the first chapter at http://bethquinnbarnard.com/blog/novels/

ALLIANCES is available now as a print-on-demand trade paperback and Kindle eBook at Amazon. In the next few weeks an eBook edition of the novel for the iPad will be available at the iBookstore. And when Barnes & Noble and Google launch their eBookstores later this year, eBook editions of ALLIANCES will on their shelves as well.

Here's a link to the Kindle version: http://www.amazon.com/ALLIANCES-eboo...9831655&sr=8-3

What do you mean `Barnes & Noble to launch their eBookstore later this year'? They already have it. And no, I don't have a Kindle.

My bad. I was referring to PubIt, the new distribution platform from Barnes & Noble that will allow small and independent presses to distribute their ebooks at Barnes & Noble. When that goes live later this year, the number of titles available at the B&N ebookstore will be so much larger it will feel like a new bookstore.

Nothing on Smashwords because they don't allow DRM on books sold through their site. Publishers large and small are standing firm on that issue at the moment. But, as with so much else in the developing eBook industry, that could change in the future.

Suggest you have a good look around the forum and you will get an idea what we think of DRM here!

Publishers standing firm on DRM

I'm well aware that DRM is not popular with many readers who read ebooks, but I don't think publishers are going to change their minds any time soon. I'd like to have a firm finding -- way beyond anecdotal evidence -- on the top reasons people dislike DRM. Is it because it can screw up and make an ebook difficult to read? Is it because legacy publishers insist on making ebook prices equivalent to the price of manufactured books? What other reasons are there for disliking DRM? Because I don't yet have an ereading device, I'm totally ignorant about the capacity for DRM to screw up. As far as pricing of ebooks, I think the pricing arguments of legacy publishers are fatuous. There is simply no excuse to include the cost of manufacturing a paperback or hardcover book in the price of an ebook. In addition, owners of manufactured books end up with a tangible object with continuing resale value while ebook readers do not -- so a FURTHER discount is in order. (Legacy publishers hate used books but, really, should I have to pay Toyota a share when I sell my used Camry? Why should publishers/authors get paid for used book sales?) At Straight Up Press, for a manufactured book priced at $12.95, the maximum ebook price for that title is $5.95, a discount that reflects both the fact that there is no cost of manufacturing and that currently ebooks have no resale value.

My objection to DRM is that it prevents me from reading my legally bought ebooks on the device of my choice. One of my e-readers has already broken, and if I had books that were DRM protected and tied to that device, I would now be unable to access and read those books - despite the fact that I have bought and paid for the books.

Hmmm, I'm not sure where Baen Books, BeWrite Books, and O'Reilly Media fit if not somewhere between 'publishers large and small' - none of them use any form of DRM, yet they seem to be quite successful. I buy mostly from places that don't impose DRM, in fact.

It seems to me that it is the Legacy Six (and their hangers-on) who think DRM will save them.

I've got two reasons (among others) why I don't like DRM:

1. You must install special DRM'd ebook mgmt software on your PC (in my case Adobe Digital Editions), download the ebook, load it into the DRM'd ebook mgmt software, authorize my ereader in ADE, and finally have ADE load the book onto my ereader. Now I can begin reading.

With Smashwords I can download the ebook, copy it to my ereader, and begin reading.

2. I can't give a DRM'd ebook to a friend. It just can't happen. Period. The DRM'd ebook is locked to my device and only my device.

With Smashwords I can cut the ebook from my device and paste it into my friend's device. Just like you'd do with a regular paper book. Cutting is removing the book from my possession, pasting is giving the book to someone else.

I have never bought a DRM'd ebook. And I will never buy a DRM'd ebook for just the very reasons I mentioned above. Like electricity, I follow the path of least resistance.

All that aside, I do wish you success in the ebook marketplace.
