Kindle books in Canada

Hi. I just joined the forum. I bought a Kindle DX and was disappointed to find that some titles are not available for download in Canada. Specifically I was trying to buy The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Does anyone know of a way to download books from sites other than Amazon to Kindle. I am not looking for a freebie - I will pay for the downloads - I just don't know where to go or if it is even possible.

Two answers ... one is that you can add a US address to your "Manage Your Kindle" profile and select it. That will enable US downloads.

The other is that there are ways of purchasing books from other stores (eg. Kobo, Sony) and loading them on your Kindle. You might find this thread helpful: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39423

A good way to search for stores is Inkmesh. What you are looking for is Adobe Digital Editions ePub, which is the format supported by most reading devices except the Kindle. This has DRM (encryption), but see Adobe ADEPT DRM for EPUB circumvented. Don't buy from Barnes and Noble, because they don't use Adobe DRM on their ebooks. It is my understanding that there is no law against stripping DRM for personal use in Canada. Once DRM-free, Calibre can convert ePub to MOBI for your Kindle.

The last issue is geographic restrictions, which is why Amazon won't sell you the US ebook. You will have to spoof the selling site to some degree in order to convince them you are buying from the US. How to do this is something of a moving target, but see for example If only I lived in the US.

Amazon.ca has this title as a paperback for CDN$6.50. Amazon.com carries the Kindle edition but not for Canada. Penguin has rights to sell the title in both markets -- the Canadian ePub can be purchased from Kobo at CDN$9.99.

What the heck, eh? Penguin has told one vendor it's okay to sell the ebook in Canada and told another vendor it isn't? But it sells the paper edition in both markets without problem?

Well that was easy. I bought a gift card, entered my brother's address in the US and downloaded the books! Thanks

Hi - I can't find "Manage Your Kindle". Is this on the Amazon website or on the Kindle?
