Firmware Update What's new in 2.5.4?

They're probably pushing them gradually... mine just did it on its own today. I really don't see a difference.

And mine is the US version, too.

I think it is only for US versions. I think that update 2.5.3 was only for k2I versions.

Mine is the US version with 2.5.3... and it is the DX

I think Pushka means it is for K2US (not DXUS). Mine just update a few minutes ago (with the new font and screensaver hacks in place... so yay!)

@daffy4u: Well, if you can upload it somewhere (AFAIK, not directly on the forums, that's frowned upon by the mods), I'll take a look at it. If you have both hacks installed, it should be stored in the linkfonts/ folder.

I'm not sure what you need to look at. I'm saying that Amazon was able to update my Kindle successfully from 2.5.2 to 2.5.4 with your hacks in place (the first version of your hacks not the updated version). It's all good!

Most likely it'll be the same as the k2i 2.5.3, ie: pretty much nothing, but you never know

Ahh, I understand now. I looked in the linkfonts folder and I do not see the bin file for the 2.5.4 update. I found some files with today's date in the system folder but none of them are bin files.

The update caught me by surprise (I didn't know to expect one). I checked in here to see what it was all about myself.

I suspect the update is hardware based. When I bought my Kindle 1, there were a couple of different firmware version numbers and Amazon stated that those differences were based on the hardware. That information used to be part of the Kindle Help File FAQ but no more.

Huh, never thought about how the OTA updates are launched, not sure the hacks will be able to trap them if they're ran automatically.

If you see it coming, and do a manual update from the Settings page, that should trap it though.

2.5.3 is for DX US, DXi, AND K2i. 2.5.4 is only for K2 US. In the last couple of days there have been reports of K2 US's getting 2.5.6 (2.5.5 is for DXG).

the more I read about constant updated firmware rleases the happier I am that I left my font hack in place and decided to NOT change anytime soon, as much as collections might be nice to have.

One wonders what this flow of updates is doing, given the slow roll-out of the 2.5 release to begin with...

I am sure Amazon is making it "better" but for who? Us or them?

actually, I bit the bullet and updated manually because of the new font hack...it's neat and fun to have the catgories and fonts.

Working super so far...now if I could just get whatever update happens after 2.5.2 on the K2i...gawds I swear owning a Kindle has become like being Sybil...these things are all different and the newest is never on Amazon for download. You would think Amazon could have the correct versions of updates in in our "Manage Your Kindle" section for our accounts since, well they KNOW which Kindle build we have already.

2.5.2 was the last major release, with new functionality and user interface changes. Everything since then -- so far -- appears to have been only bug and/or performance fixes: no actual feature changes.
