How do 600 and 650 compare?

Hi Folks

I may be able to buy a PRS-600 at half the price of a 650.

I can't justify the price of a new 650 ($300) to myself, but, can half that.

Anybody care to make some comments?

Thank you.

The screen on the 600 is FAR from being as CLEAR as the 650. I skipped buying the 600 when it came out. I continued using my 505 until the 650 came out. Only then did I make the purchase.

I'd recommend skipping on the 600. The touch screen layer on that edition made the text fuzzier.

I hear they are offering a new Reader in August. No word on how it looks, but I am sure the screen will be awesome with the technology thats out there today.

As solitarywolf has stated the screen on the 600 is nowhere as good as the 650, it looks black and grey rather than black and white. But if that's all you can afford it's better than nothing.

I have both the 600 and the 650, not that I use the 600 any more, but during the time I had only the 600 I was more than happy with it.

The touch screen is not as responsive as the 650, but still perfectly usable.

Thanks for your thoughts. Shortly after posting my question, I came across a thread that said pretty much the same thing.

If I can get the 600 at a very low price, I will, otherwise, I think I will save my pennies.

Seth - I REALLY like your avatar. When I was a kid I had the car, folding wings-n-all, that was a while ago now.

Have fun

I had a 600. It was fine. I enjoyed it.

I got a 650 and gave the 600 to my wife. Side by side, there is no comparison, the 650 is MUCH better. I could not go back to the 600. And my wife has already OK'd my buying the next generation so she can get my 650.

If you never see a 650, the 600 is OK.

I wouldn't buy a 600 at any price. Maybe I'm more sensitive than most, or maybe the fact that I wear glasses doubled the glare, but I received one as a gift, and I returned it. For 89 days, I tried to love it. I just couldn't. It gave me horrible headaches. I have had a 650 since about a week after it came out, and I LOVE it.

Yeah same here as suncor - sort of. I have the 350 and 600. I just started recently using the 600 again because of the larger screen and you have to have much brighter light, but the 350 screen is much better. When I first got the 600 I used it for a couple months then went back to physical books. With the 350 I have been using it consistently. Next models, I may get the big boy and keep the 350 for super portability.

Thank you. I have loved that movie since I first saw it as a kid. My parents bought me one when I was six. Sadly the girl was missing so we had to return it. Somtime in 89-90 I was able to get the anniversary reissue of the car. I love it so much to this day.

Let us know what Sony Reader you settle for. I am very sure you will be happy with it. I've been using them since 2007 daily.

For those that are interested, someone just bought a 650 for ~$320 on ebay.

Does come with 2 cases, one with, one without a light, but, seems pricey to me second hand.

I bought both the PRS-300 and 600. When the 350/650 became available and Sony made a $75 trade-in offer, I bought the 350 and 650. There is an enormous difference in the clarity between the former and the latter.

I do not recommend that anyone buy the 300/600 versions.

Save your money; buy only the later models.

The 650 blows the 600 out of the water, IMO. I had a 600 and I send it in for the $75 credit when they had that promotion and I got a 650. Everything irritating on the 600, big or small, is fixed in the 650, plus it weighs less. The only thing is, it doesn't come with even the flimsy Neoprene case the 600 came with, so I'm glad I kept my case. I LOVE my 650. Glad to see you got one.

Too bad now it's only $36 trade-in.
And because my 950 back to repair(and it's on back order for replacement now) I have to stick with 600.

I wouldn't buy a 600, but the 300 is NOT the same. It doesn't have a touchscreen and the contrast is much better than the 600 (and pretty close to the 350's). I have a 350 but the 300 is still being used--nice compact form, a good Reader model for those who don't want/need a touchscreen or dictionary. The 300 is a fine device for reading books. (And I onlu use the touchscreen on the 350 to turn pages and, by necessity, to navigate menus although the 300's buttons do that just fine.)

I donated my 600 to my public library and kept my 505.

That's how much the 600 stank.

Nice features, nearly unreadable screen.

I'm holding out to see what the new Sony(s) offer(s) before I decide whether to upgrade yet or not.
