No iPad
Hi girls/guys,
I'm currently a student, and I read a lot of books aswell as academic papers. The academic papers are both OCR and just pictures in pdf files. I realise the iPad is optimal for this, but considering how much I can focus when I have my iPhone/Laptop with me I need to solve this in a different way. I got a simpler phone, just for phonecalls to get that distraction away. But now I need a good reader so I don't have to carry around all the papers. So, I need a Reader without wifi/3g. I am in Sweden(If that matters). The Prs-600 looks promising, but I saw that eink is releasing a new display.. Maybe I should wait? |

Based on all of your requirements I would agree that the 600 would best suit your needs. I think the note pad software and built in calendar will also make for a great assistant for school work.
Also I read a lot of PDFs, books, personal docs and OCR. Only books are readable without effort. However trying to read PDF on a 6" is not pleasant, even with the Zoom and reflow. You're best of learning how to use tools like soPDF, Briss, Paper Crop, PDFReader. These are tools all found on this site that help reformat PDF to fit on smaller screens. As far as holding off. Well let me tell you from experience, its real hard to predict the future. ![]() Right now the 600 have dropped in price and 170USD you can pick up a device that debut at 300USD. My feeling is that the new devices might be nicer, but the price might also increase. My general rule is if I am in the market for a device I do not worry about what will come out tomorrow unless it has already been announced. So far nobody has made any announcements for a new reader. |

You should look at the kindle dx. Yes it has 3G but the web browsing on it is so unsatisfying ill doubt it would be much of a distraction. Other than that PDFs look wonderful on it and the new graphite version screen is a site to behold

Onyx Boox for example has "free zoom". Meaning, you can mark whatever area you're interested in with the reader's stylus and explode that area to full screen. |

i would counter that the screen is big enough where zoom is not normally needed (even though it is available now). Or you can view in landscape half page at a time for a really nice view. It is my opinion that zoom, given the speed of e-ink (especially with graphic heavy pdf's) is no substitutute for a larger screen given that application (PDF viewing)

Thanks for the input!
As you say, the bigger screen makes it easier. It also seems easier to get one to Sweden. Going to think some more about it! |

I would advise against getting the Sony 600 for pdfs that have alot of images, its takes forever to load and zoom just is a pain.

I second this recommendation - PDF's on any 6" device are possible but always seems like a "thought exercise" to me rather than a pleasant experience
