Is the Jetbook Lite my only option?
I am absolutely loving my Sony 900 but as I read the forums each day I've been thinking about a few things.
I'm borrowing books from the library and sometimes the 2 or 3 week period isn't enough. I would someday like to finish Ken Follet's World Without End... I've been reading about the Jetbook Lite not having a clock. That sounds appealing to me since I am a slow reader. What I want is a reader that will do library books, has large to very large fonts and doesn't have to clock/time restriction. I think the Jetbook Lite is an option. Are there any others? |

This is likely to be a touchy subject but if I were going to break the borrowing time limit of a Library book, I'd probably just do it by taking off the DRM and then deleting the book once I was done reading --- rather than buying a new reader. Really the same thing.

Another possibility, though limiting, is to not navigate away from that library book once it's nearly expired.
I'm not sure all of these precautions are necessary, but this is what I do to keep reading an expired library book:
The above is mechanics only, no ethics (like less sales by the publisher to libraries because demand seems less). |

Like jj2me says, I think there's a workaround for this. Sonys automatically sync the time and date when you plug them in to your computer. So just manually change the date on the Reader, then don't plug it in your computer till you finish the book and it won't know that book has expired. You can return it to the library like normal but it will stay on the Reader till you delete it or fix the date.

Banjo. thanks so much for explaining a workaround in a way that my thick head could understand. If it works it will certainly be cheaper than buying a second reader.

A Jetbook lite will not work for library eBooks. You need to have a clock. The Gen3 from Bookeen did not work for library eBooks when the clock was not working.

You're welcome. I haven't tried it myself so I hope it works for you. I know you can manually change the date and time, though.

I beg to differ from a previous comment.
I don't know if the jetbook lite can read libary books now, the ectaco site will have details of the latest firmware regarding the DRM issue. But with regards to the clock issue, I have a Libre, same mechanics as Jetbook, no clock. I have two library books in it now, already there two months, just finished reading both, switching from one to the other, no problem at all. I think that for pure library lending in order to read slowly without having to remove DRM, nothing so far beats the Libre/Jetbook series. |
