Free Books Updated

Anyone have their Free books update in the last couple of days These were ones downloaded through Kobo for free like twain, Wells etc. Now they are still there but if you try and open them they won't open. Same thing happened with the Kobo Desktop App and they are not viewable there either.

Yeah, my desktop updated all my free books this morning. I hadn't thought about opening them again.

and egad, yes - I just tried, and they will not open; says the file is locked and may be corrupt. Then I get a runtime error message.

Has anyone reported this to Kobo Customer Service?

ETA: I guess we could just go to Project Gutenberg, or wherever, to "replace" them.

I've made a post at the Kobo Get Satisfaction website to describe the error and to ask if a fix would be forthcoming.

Gotta love how they force you to go to a third party site (for which you need Yet Another Friggin' Account) for bug reports and information rather than let you notify them through their own site. So glad I haven't let my touch upgrade past 1.9.14...

Actually, it's easier than making the phone call to Customer Service.

I was getting a preview for a book today and my desktop synced the books. Now I have the same problem.

But it does seem to only be the free classics. Star Wars: Lost Tribe of The Sith works well, for example. But None of the classics work anymore.

Yes, I could download the epub version (they are all in my library) or go to Gutenberg (which they seem to be taken from), but I don't want to get about 300 books again...

I will certainly not sync my Kobo and not buy any books from Kobo, either, until this is resolved.

Free books that were listed as Adobe DRM Epub are okay... it's just the ones listed as "Download Epub" that come up as corrupted. When you try to open them from the Kobo, they come up with the error message. When you try to open them from Kobo Desktop on the computer, it crashes the program. The only solution I could work out was to delete each of the free books manually from the "My Library" section of the Kobo site, wait a couple of hours and then reload them again. (The ones I tried to reload instantly still came up as corrupted). It took an hour or so (I have over a hundred free books on my Kobo), but it's working fine now. I'm just annoyed at how much wasted time was spent on this and how inadequate the response from the Kobo site was. (Having said this, I have pruned my library a little in the process and left out a few of the books I never look at).

No. But just now, after reading your suggestion, I went to do so, and got this message when I hit Log Out:

Are you sure you want to sign out? We will remove your books from Kobo Desktop, but not from your account. You will also lose any highlights you added to your books.

I opted to stay logged in.

Ouch, me too... on the device, and on the desktop, though removeing and re-downloading one fixed it - that is, fixed that book, not all of them.

Really losing confidence in Kobo, the current firmware is a pig, and now this!

This is the response I got from Kobo Support:

Hello Paul:

Thank you for emailing our Kobo Customer Care Team.

You said that you can no longer open any of your books on your Kobo Touch. Have you tried to do a basic reset on your device? To do a basic reset you would insert a paperclip in the hole on the back of the device. Then you would press till you hear a click, this will reset the eReader. Then try to open your books. If this does not work, you can do a factory reset on your device. To do a factory reset you would go to your SETTINGS, then to DEVICE INFORMATION, then to RESET TO FACTORY. Once the reset is done you will have to do the set up again. When you get the READ ON on your device, you would then plug it into your computer and it will say GET STARTED on your computer. Follow the prompts till it asks you to sign into your Kobo account. Then all your books will download again to your device and you should be able to open them.

Yours truly,

Lucie
Kobo Team

Hmm... of course, doing this loses all annotations, etc... so I opted for deleting each file one by one and then redownloading them. Back to normal now with a much pruned library of free titles.

By the look of it, you're using Kobo Desktop on your computer, here. Logging out of this simply temporarily removes the titles from the desktop program, but does not remove them from the cloud nor from your Kobo e-reader. When you log back in, it repopulates the Desktop program (but it does take about ten minutes if you have a lot of titles...)

Well considering the problem is not just with the device but with the desktop too reseting the device isn't going to do anything. There is something wrong with the files themselves. Deleting and re downloading them sounds like the way to go. In my case I just deleted them all and bypassed Kobo for them. No reason to have a bunch of books that will update themselves for no reason and cause problems. I will just get them from other sources.

Signing out and in again seems to have helped. I haven't checked all of my 397 books, but about 20 and they will open.

But it was a major PITA. The Kobo desktop didn't download them all in one go so it took at least one hour of syncinc, restarting the desktop and more syncinc. And for what reason?

I just hope that if I sync my Kobo touch with the desktop, I will not have to do the same for my KT.
