That is a pity. A very notable author; she'll be missed.

I think of her a bit like Alan Plater, who also died recently - a significant figure in literary circles, but never quite a household name.
One of those authors I never quite get round to reading. |

Can't say that I read any of her work, either, but she was certainly recognised as being a notable author.

Beryl certainly will be missed. She had a wonderful sense of humour as well as a great deal of talent, both as a writer and an actress.

I have read several of her books. She wrote good prose and I loved the overall tone of her books.

How sad to lose such a wonderful writer--still have her pb's on my shelf. It's a shame she isn't well known in the states.
Jeeez Banville is so full of himself: "She was a wonderful writer in the tradition of British petit guignol that included Evelyn Waugh and Muriel Spark: coolly stylish, meticulous, beady-eyed and horribly funny. I would have wished her more injury time, but her record stands," said the Man Booker prize-winning author John Banville. "I met [her] on a couple of occasions and was much taken with her manner of stark lugubriousness tempered with high and subversive irony - just like her books." Never forget that when a brilliant author dies you lose nothing but the next book. Their last wills and testaments leave everything to everyone. What wonderful, generous folks. But death is always sad. Bye, Beryl. Catch you last time. Neil
