LOL, we seem to be getting this question quite a lot.

Yes, iPad is your easiest and most effective choice at the moment. No conversions or anything, just pdf goodness on demand.

Too big? I dare to say that it's just some inches ... too small. A4 format is 210 × 297 (8x11 inches)

Yes, but I looking for one that's more like A5(148 × 210mm, 6 x 8 inche)
or around that.
I had a Palm T5 that almost did the job. 5' screen. But that was a to small. Mayby 7 - 8' screen I think.

The Dell mini 5 lookes nice?

The iPad display _is_ smaller than an A4 sized pdf. But I've found that the screen is so crispy clear that even a reduced pdf is quite readable. Even magazine pages reduced to fit on the screen are readable. And of course you can always do the pinching gesture on the screen to magnify if you want to study a column or photo.

The battery life of my iPad being used as an ebook reader is maybe a couple of days. I've been recharging mine every night. It hasn't gone lower than 70% after a day of use as an ebook reader only.

The only downsides of the iPad is the cost and screen washout in bright light.

Have you checked out the iRex devices? The Irex DR800SG looks like it might be what you are looking for, it has an 8 inch screen and I've seen that it's had some very good reviews. iRex is having financial difficulties, however, so that's something to keep in mind if you decide to look into purchasing one of their devices.
