Reader survives drop

Well, my Sony reader has just survived a drop from table top height onto a hard floor with no apparent problem. It did land flat. Thought ya'll might want to know.

I am afraid I have that slightly trumped...you are fortunate that the drop was flat.

I managed to juggle it in the street and got a corner strike on the asphalt. The paint/frame whatever chipped

Still, it's nice to know it can survive common drops like the ones experienced here?

Now, anyone wanna try it from a house roof?

I've dropped mine a few times. Dropped it and bounced it off a bed frame onto carpet once. Dropped a couple of times onto carpet on various sides/corners. Dropped it once on tile where it landed on it's side. All of these were with it in the stock cover and the cover closed. No damage/problems so far. <knock on wood>

You were lucky. Am I the only person here that bought an extended warranty for stuff like this?

My worst was falling asleep and having it take a tumble from my hand down to the carpet. It hit the bed frame in the bottom right corner hard enough to have a little silver scratch (where the gunmetal gray/black got scratched) that really only I notice. Reader's just fine.

Yesterday mine fell off the couch arm to carpet when my pillow whacked it. It bumped against the wall (and caused me to let a cuss word fly) but it's still no worse for the wear.

Count me in the warranty crowd! I dread the thought of either being without the Reader or having to buy the same thing twice.

I wish I could take the extra warranty. But it doesn't make much sense if you live outside the US... think of all the trouble I'd have to go through:

a) send the Reader back to Sony (overseas);
b) find an US address where Sony can ship the repaired/replaced unit
c) send the Reader back from the US to where you live (in my case Europe).

It would probably take months to take care of the logistics, not to mention the costs involved (duty taxes).

So I better don't break my Reader!

I don't understand their reasoning to only sell in the US anyways....I found that odd and don't understand their reasoning behind that one.

There's a very simple answer for that one. Sony wants to tie the reader to their online store (Kind of like Apple iTunes/iPod). They only have negotiated rights to sell eBooks from their store for the USA. Since they're only allowed to sell books in the USA, and they don't want to sell readers to anyone who can't buy their books, they therefore don't sell the reader in other markets.

Simple, right?
