Reader problems once again. - strange display behaviour

Hi folks

Once again I have a problem with my Reader:

2 Days ago I almost finished a book but then I switched off the Reader to get some sleep

This morning I tried to switch it on (from standby) but nothing happened.

I pressed the "mark" button to check whether the Reader is switched on. The blue light went on and then off just like when you're creating a bookmark.

So the Reader indeed was powered on.

I tried to turn it off (into standby). Then the display did the usual black-white-black-white flash but it was more of a lightgrey-white-flash.

Does anybody have an idea what's wrong with that damn device this time?

I don't think it's the battery because 2 days ago it displayed 3 of 4 bars.

Did you try a soft/hard reset?

That's the only idea I've got offhand too. Except that you might try plugging it into the wall until the charge light goes out, just to be sure that it's not a charge issue.

@diabloNL: No. Since the last resets did almost brick my Reader I don't really want to try that. Normally it would be the first thing I do.

@NatCh: I'm trying this right now. ... Of course you're right about the views.

I mailed bhphotovideo the last time my Reader was bricked.
But since I was able to solve the problem I didn't further communicate with them.

Now I told them that I have this problem again and asked them for an exchange Reader for my faulty device.

They told me the what-ever-it's-called period was over and I should contact sony. I'm very disappointed.

Does anyone have an email address of a helpful member of bhphotovideo?

I bought the Reader on about the 1st of july this year and reported that the device has a defect on 8/8/07. That's only about 5 weeks after I bought that damn thing. I thought this particular "return"/exchange/repair"-peroid is 60 day? 90 days?

It sounds like B&H has a set period for returns/exchages and you've exceeded it. Usually mosts stores won't go past 30 days. The Sony warranty is still valid if you can find someone in the USA to send it to who can then in turn send it to Sony.

Hm ... I know that the whole warranty stuff (sorry for that expression but I don't remember the excact term right now) I much worse in the usa compared to germany - but is it really THAT bad? Only 30 days???? That's like nothing!

In Germany the situation is:

In the first 6 months after you bought: The seller has to repair everything. He can try 2 times. If the device is still faulty after the 2nd time he has to give you a new device or return your money.

From the 6th month to 2 years(!): Same as above but you have to prove that the defect is not your fault and is due to a construction problem (or like that).

The manufactor can give an additional warranty but I almost never used this.

I'm begining to think my Reader want's to mess with me (I don't know whether that's the right term - in german it'd be: das scheiß ding will mich wohl verarschen^^).

I just tried to boot my Reader for about the 15th to 20th time since it again is "bricked". And: it just bootet normally and works again.

Of course I'm happy it works again but I'm totally puzzled what I did wrong.
I don't really want to use my Reader anymore because I fear it'll brick again :/

Good to hear it works again.

Just use it and enjoy it for as long as it works. I mean that in a positive way.

Have you tried to customise your reader? I mean with any unofficial upgrades from the forum?

@astra_lestat: No. I never tried those mods. The only thing I did was to upgrade the firmware after the first "bricked" situation.

How did you update your reader?

I just updated mine 2 days ago for the first time with the lates firmware. I have done it via Connect software. I told it to check for a newer version, it found one and asked me whether I would like to proceed etc.

I updated from the very first fw because I bypassed second fw in february.
