8" (NOT 10" :) eink device
I was this close from buying iRex DR800S, to replace my Sony PRS-505, for sole reason - reading technical documentation. I'm managing somehow on 505, but it's either proper layout and unreadable font, or readable font and layout all screwed up. Reflow does wonders to Python code.
As you probably know, iRex went belly up, or close to it. Without a company to guarantee the support, I'm not really committed to buy such expensive device. After checking the matrix, looks like I'm down to two other devices: Kindle DX or Sony PRS-900. Kindle looks like something a bit too big (almost 10", right?). Sony *might* be good - but it's not available in EU (and as such, is without support). Plus it has this 3G connection, which I don't really need (and I'd rather prefer NOT to have, to avoid, ahem, 1984-ish attempts to censor the contents of the reader remotely). Is there anything else in 8" eInk screen size range, that I should look at, or do I need to wait few months, untill all those A9s, Pocketbooks and other fancy devices arrive? |

I don't think anybody has an 8" screen except for iRex. With the iLiad generation, they were the only ones that had the hardware to support it. Currently, I believe Epson does offer an 8" version of their display controller, but I don't know of anybody who is using it.

So, I've looked at two other devices closely. PRS-900 is really 7", so it's straight out. And as for Kindle DX - even if I convince myself that the size is OK, it still looks like reading PDFs (and that's the format I'm equipped with) is a pain (no TOC? no links?).
My inner child is sad, looks like there'll be no shiny till end of that year... ![]() |

Yacoob, I'm in the same boat as you. Spending 2 hrs a day in NYC subway and reading IT literature on Sony 505 it's a pain. I have tons of PDF books that I want to read, but there is no device for it. All I want is 8,9 or even 10" device that can correctly display PDF's. I really don't care about any functionality. I don't want to pay $500 for Kiddie, plus there is keyboard on it. Wtf? There is a laptop for everything else.
If anybody find an acceptable device - let me know. |
