PRS600 battery now u/s

Hello all. My 7 month old Sony PRS600 now has a dead battery. It stopped holding it's charge when using the USB cable so I bought a wall charger.

I charged it from empty yesterday, did not touch it over night and now it won't even power up. In short the battery is u/s.

Worse, I can't find a replacement. Not sure what to do. Not happy with Sony or their reader, should I send it in for diagnostics/repair or should I try to sort it out myself? I am sure I can find a battery with help, plus help on how to install it. I am in the UK, where do I start with this?

Cheers

Phil

If it's only 7 months old, a faulty battery will be replaced under warranty.

Does the little charging light on top of the reader come on while charging with the USB cable? With the wall charger?

On my refurb unit, the charging seems to work OK only when the reader is totally switched off, not in standby mode. That means pushing the power switch to the OFF position and holding it until the screen displays a dialog box confirming power-off.
I found out only because I had the same charging issue, and the red-light would not come on when I just plugged in the charger (whether USB or pin-plug). When totally off, charging light comes on when plugged.
I did declare that mine is a refurb, so I always thought that it might be just one of the trade-offs...

Just to cover the obvious... your reader is in Power-Off mode and not standby, right?

Oh bloke. I'm not sure what is going on. It would appear that the DC wall charger doesn't want to know but the USB wall charger is showing me a red charging light one minute but not the next. There's no rhyme or reason to the symptoms. Currently it is in the 'off' status and showing a red charging light with the USB wall charger. However I have seen a red charging light when the device is in standby before now. It should also be noted I think that the only reason it is in the off position right now is that even though I had seen a full charge on the battery meter earlier, as soon as I switched to standby, when I switched it back on I got an immediate battery low warning.

I switched it back to standby and when I tried to start it again it had packed up completely. So I checked out the specs of my LG mobile phone USB wall charger it is 5.1V DC 0.7A. The DC-in socket on the reader is stamped 5.2V so I shouldn't be overdoing it. Also the DC wall charger is 1A so I thought why not give it a go. And lo although I did at first have a red charging light it has now gone off but the reader recognises that it is plugged into a USB cable even though it is not plugged into my laptop.

Like I said. I don't know what is going on.

Just to be sure, do you connect your wallcharger with the USB port of the Reader? If so that won't work and can actually drain the Reader, when charging through USB it needs to detect a computer. It might detect some USB wallchargers for electronics, like the LG one, but not the generic ones with a standard USB cable.

You could also use any PSP charger with has a barrel tip.

Good luck!

Rump. Yes. I have had it plugged into the USB port and I hate to tell you this but the reaction is exactly the same as though it was plugged into the PC. It does actually give me a charge, though not a full meter charge and it doesn't seem to last for long but it does seem to last longer than a 'DC' charge.

You need to plug it in with a proper charger. As mentioned above, a PSP charger will work (they have the round yellow tip). They are not expensive. You may even have a friend that has one to try out. You may be able to top off the charge with a USB charger/computer, but it sounds as if your device is totally drained. To remedy that you'll need to use the correct charger.

Some USB chargers are wired correctly, I read about a charger from a Creative mp3 player that will charge the reader, but most won't. I don't know why your charger only charges a bit.

Also if you hook up your reader to a computer to charge be sure it doesn't go into sleep mode or is switched off, this drains the reader. It might be that the charger you're using detects it as a computer in sleep mode and thus not charges (much). Who knows.

I myself use a USB wallcharger (5V 1amp) where I have to use your own USB cable, I got a USB cable which has both a PSP plug and a USB mini plug. With it I can charge my Reader (with the PSP plug) and other devices.

You could, of course, also buy the official Sony charger but it's overpriced and does the same thing as a PSP charger.
