I wonder if the site owner was making money off the site. His past police record doesn't sound well for him.

If he was taking comic books and posting them, that's publication and that's piracy. If that's the case, they are right to hammer him.

He sounds like a real piece of work.

Wow-- this is as significant a success in stemming the flow of pirated comics as BP's recent top kill!

Thanks for the information and link. I applaud the effort to stop illegal activities.

and now hundreds of similar sites will be opened soon...

When MP3.com, Napster and Kazaa began making music piracy as easy as point-and-click, the Recording Industry Association of America began a famous (infamous?) scorched-earth campaign against infringers, unleashing thousands of lawsuits on unsuspecting users who just wanted to add a little Brittney and Bono to their iPods.

Actually, it's copyright violation (piracy usually being reserved for violent crimes commited on the High Seas), but I know it doesn't sound quite as sexy...

Quite a dent it made in the supply of illegal comics I'm sure.

I too dislike the use of 'piracy' to describe copyright violations. But the term 'piracy' goes back a long way and publishers have been using it to describe being ripped off for a very long time, possibly longer than we've used it to describe the Jack Sparrow type activities. It doesn't sound right though.

Sorry I have to disagree again: "theft" involves the taking of a physical object in such a way that the original owner no longer has it. If you want indeed call it what it is "copyright infringement" would fit the bill nicely. Which is a civil offense, by the way, in most cases.

Call it what you want. I call it what it is. You and most everyone here knows that. If you take something that is not yours to take you are a thief.

I think if he was, the news articles would have said so, they certainly seem to have the pitchforks out for him. He seems to have thought that Marvel, DC, etc would have been interested in going into a profit share scheme with him.

Amazing. It will be interesting to see how it plays out as well as future actions of the group and law enforcement.

Well, it's not, but I'm not going to argue with laymen about the finer points of law in a public forum like this one. So, have a nice day; you're entirely entitled to your extremist views, encouraged even it can be argued by the content media's highly successful vilification campaign. If you're playing their game it means you're either a) an interested party (with a none too subtle agenda), or b) a useful idiot pawn.
