Will We Succeed? The Science of Self-Motivation

ScienceDaily (June 1, 2010) — Can you help you? Recent research by University of Illinois Professor Dolores Albarracin and Visiting Assistant Professor Ibrahim Senay, along with Kenji Noguchi, Assistant Professor at Southern Mississippi University, has shown that those who ask themselves whether they will perform a task generally do better than those who tell themselves that they will.

Little research exists in the area of self-talk, although we are aware of an inner voice in ourselves and in literature. From children's books like "The Little Engine That Could," in which the title character says, "I think I can," to Holden Caulfield's misanthropic musings in "A Catcher in the Rye," internal dialogue often influences the way people motivate and shape their own behavior.

But was "The Little Engine" using the best motivational tool, or does "Bob the Builder" have the right idea when he asks, "Can we fix it?"

My inner voice keeps shouting "get on with it" , another little voice says "I'll leave it until tomorrow".

It's an interesting thought that, in order to complete something, we have to ask ourselves (permission?), rather than tell.....

Maybe it's the "asking permission" that causes us to think and consider options and alternatives and thus makes the following action more likely to succeed (rather than just bulling ahead mindlessly).

So what one needs to do is work out how to ask "correctly". Affirmation is what it is usually called.

Funny, If I decide to myself that I'll do X, I'm okay with it; but if someone else also asks me to do X - I go off the idea... Happens a lot.

So what are we going to do about it ?

I allowed myself early retirement in order to become more practised in art - needless to say, after nearly 3 years, it hasn't happened ..... Mind - there have been distractions, but in themselves not valid excuses....

The lady who lives in my sat-nav - Jane she's called - is always telling me what to do and never asks. If I don't do exactly as instructed she says "Turn around when possible", and if I ignore that she says "Make a u-turn", and her voice gets more and more irritated. Sometimes we get so pissed with each other that we don't speak for hours.
Maybe we'd get on better if she asked me rather than telling me.
