"Hey, is that an iPad?"

Reading my Sony Reader on the train.
Man next to me asks "Hey, is that an iPad?"
Told him what it was, but he seemed disappointed it wasn't that magical Apple device he had clearly heard about.
Anyone had a similar experience?

Happens to me all the time with my motorcycle. Someone says "What kind of a Harley is that?" To which I reply, It's the Yamaha model.

I've had both the motorcycle and the eReader response happen to me! (650 Silverado, PRS300) I like Yamahas since they make both motorcycles and musical instruments. It appeals to my sense of aesthetics.

Here in Eastern Pennsylvania, I've had the odd response of people asking me a couple of times if I'm reading the Bible on it. When I say no, they express their disapproval.

I've never had that response in the midwest and in the south of the USA, places firmly in the Bible belt where liberal prejudices would claim such behavior should be common. So far, it's only happened in Reading and Phillie. Weird. Especially since THEY aren't reading (or even carrying) the Bible at the time.

Do you ever say, "No, I'm reading The Satanic Verses," just to see what happens?

Of course, in those places they don't ask, they just assume you are

Just had that happen to me. I was sitting at a bar restaurant eating dinner and reading on my PB360 and a guy next to me asked if that was an ipad.

Happends to me in university a whole lot, I just got my kobo less than a week ago, it's especially because ebook readers aren't prevalent in Australia.

Hasn't happened yet. I've practiced a lot of possible responses though. Not because I need time to prepare my wit, but because I need time to prepare my knowledge of legal recourse.

No, I try to be a good advocate of eBook reading by saying something like, "No, but many versions of the Bible are available in ebook format."

In the south and the mid-west, I think it is considered rude to ask a stranger what they are reading. It would be as bad form as asking them about their underwear. At least that is how I was raised.

Maybe further east, intellectual and spiritual pursuits are considered more community property in nature. (remember, in PA, they eat scrapple, you got to assume that sort of inexplicable diet is going to affect judgement in a variety of ways!) It's hard to say, it hasn't happened a LOT anywhere, but where it happened to me was exclusively in Pennsylvania.

I'm sure once I put on my black Decalgirl skin on my Kindle, I'll get the same question.

Wait a year and the question will change. A year ago I was asked if my iRex DR1000 was a kindle. Now I get the question, is it an ipad. Next year it may be is it PlasticLogic...nah that won't happen. They are still looking for the switch to turn on the production line.
