Well it finally happened

My wife left our PRS-500 in her purse on the floor and I stepped on it in a sleepy stumble to the phone ringing in the living room, bending the bottom part of the frame and blanking out half the screen.

What are my options for replacement here? I don't buy a lot of books, we mostly read things that are public domain on it in RTF or LRF format if I can get it.

Something basic with similar functionality to the 500 would be nice, maybe epub support, SD slot and maybe OSX support (something Sony fumbled with on the 500).

I'm personally holding out for something like the Skiff reader, but would like to get my wife a cheap replacement (under $200 if possible.) Preferably not a Sony as their software is terrible and I think I'm done with their consumer electronics after the Reader and my old mp3 Walkman.

Well you could try the Kobo, it fits most of those requirements (not sure about OSX support) and is definitely one of the cheaper readers out there. Although I hear the Kobo softwear is just terrible, so maybe not.

You could also look at the Jetbook or Aluratek Libre, there seem to be a lot of deals with lately so getting it for cheap shouldn't be a problem.

The Astak EZReader Pocket Pro is also around 200 I think, so that might be worth looking into.

You could always do drag and drop onto an sd card, at least that is what I do with my Sony or use calibre if you don't like the Sony software. But since you are looking for something other than Sony I guess that doesn't really matter.

The EZReader Pocket Pro looks great. All the functionality of the Sony without any required software and a bunch of expandability features (new fonts, better zoom).
