Proud New Papa!!!!!!

As the title states, I am a proud new Papa of the Nook. And I could not be happier, I am just in love with this thing. And if it wasn't for my wife bringing one home I would be a regretful owner of the kindle

I posted some of this in another sub forum but I will repeat here anyway

My co-worker was slowly wooing me into the dark side of e-books as I was a hold out of the "No, I love the feel of a real book" etc. He had the kindle. He would lend it to me during my lunch hours and downtimes. And I was convinced. Ok I can see this being a nice advantage and I really like e-ink.
So I was all set to put in my order. Then my wife came home with the Nook. Now i knew of it, since I am a Barnes and Noble junkie, but just really didn't pay much mind to it. so my wife brings one home and I start to play with it, order a book and order up the Boston Globe etc. It was love at first play. the looks and the feel of it were light years ahead of the Kindle. I loved the color touch screen navigation. It was like using my iPhone on my e-reader. Just a really cool way to navigate through the menues.
So I was like 'OK", let me go back to my co-workers Kindle. Well I felt like I went through a time portal back to the 80's. The Kindle now felt like one of those handheld electronic games or like those hand held Soduko Electronic games.
It now felt 'ehh' as compared. The nook is sooooooo much more sexier, it has that really nice rubberized back etc. It looks and feels more high end.

So I went back and did some research. At first I became hesitant based on early reviews. Seemed buggy, slow and sluggish. But being in the Marketing industry and how electronic gadgets work now a days, Many are rushed to market whith firmware fixes to follow. This is actually very very common. Remember the first iPhone and all its bugs. Well I was very impressed that Barnes and Noble came out with 3 firmware updates and after the last one. v.1.3 this thing is rocking and rolling

con't

Part II

So upon further inspection others reasons poped up. I am book love first and foremost, I love Barnes and Noble to go sit in until they kick me out. I love to support my local library. So the instore browser and reading any book is fantastic, I can't tell ya how much I love that. Plus instore nook owner coupons and Free Fridays. Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It supports E-Pub so I can go to my local library and check out books and such. Such a great feature. and to find out the Kindle does not support e-Pub?

also here are my other reasons

1.) Brick and Mortar support. if you want it today you can get it today, same as returns, and if something feels weird or you don't understand, bring it in and they walk you through it. That is very nice.

2.) Wi-Fi. Kindles uses Whisper net. Hmm Whispernet may not do me any good when I'm up in that Bed Breakfast in Vermont or the Maine. Most if hotels offer wi fi. That is a little bizzare on Kindle's part.

3) I am fed up with wall in gardens. I love my iPod but hated the fact that I was so locked into iTunes. Amazon is taken there approach straight from their play book. Yes I know you can convert. But I don't want to have to convert hundreds of books down the road and have to strip the DRM. Just NO.

4.) Replacable battery. What happens when your battery will no longer hold its charge? And it will. What is Amazon's after warranty support on the battery? Do you have a $260 paperweight with the Kindle? If my battery dies, it's just a quick jump over to Best Buy. Same day back to reading.

5. sd mirco card slot. Oh Yeah I can fill that no problem That is a no on the Kindle, you'll have to either delete them out or archive to a mangement system on your computer. Yet again another extra hassels that needs not to be.

there are soo many other reason. Oh how I'm so lucky my wife cam home that day with a Nook.

It's sleek, it's sexy, it is just that much better.

too bad the current Nook (v.1.3) wasn't the one that came out in the beginning. I think the Kindle really would have slipped more.

but anywho thanks for reading and that is my Nook store.

did I meantion how much I love it

I also just got my nook, after MONTHS of thinking about what e-reader to buy. The reasons you mention above that I quoted were pretty much the tipping point for me. I love Amazon for buying stuff, but I didn't want to be locked in to their format, even if they do have a larger selection of in-copyright books. Quantity isn't going to help me if they opt to stop making Kindles because it's more profitable to support Apple Ipads or something.

For me, it was finally nook vs Sony, and in the end, I went with the company that seems to be really trying to make the nook more than just a machine. When I found out about things like ARC bookclubs for the nook and tie-ins between in-store and the nook, such as the current coupons, I knew I wanted the nook.

After playing with it a bit, I'm getting happier and happier with my choice. Sounds like you are, too!

Have fun! (I know I am!)

I tried a sony after loosing my nook to a stone floor. I couldn't take it. I love my nook and spend hours a day using it. It is a darn good ebook viewing device, and getting better with each upgrade. The areas it lacks in (markup, dictionary is still slow, etc.) aren't a big deal for me (I'm not in college anymore, I don't need to take notes!).

Recently, at a family gathering, I was asked "Is that an iPhone" which infuriated me (but as it's family, you hide it) and "Is that a Kindle" which I saw as an exciting evangelical moment.
