A slow boat away from piracy?
Having watched the Ipad, and the trend for dedicated music players to forgo external chip slots, and the trend of watching video on streaming video, (i.e. Hulu, ect.) and the announcement that when google books offers the orphan section (for pay section) will be straming rather than download, I wonder....
Is the move to streaming content (and to limited access gadgets) going to start a trend away from piracy? Not necessariy among the skilled techies, but the lower tech general populace, by making it not so easy to pirate and easy not to... Your thought are appreciated. |

God I hope not, its bad enough that amazon can remotely delete files, if a streaming file is edited you'd have one less way to compare it to others. I dislike things that could be used for 1984 style editing of things to fit the world view of the powers that be. Pirate files can act as a direct check on the cloud.

There is a tendency to take everything from the direct control of the consumer and place it online, where supposedly we can have easy direct access from anywhere. We are encouraged to keep our backups online, to store our photos online, to save and even to edit our documents online. I remember when gmail was down for several hours a while ago, the internet was full of frustrated people (many of them professionals) who felt absolutely cut off. Since then I download all my important mail. If I like even such a simple thing as an image enough to want to see it again, I don't bookmark the page, I download it. You never know when and what will be taken down and out of your reach. I would hate streaming-only access to become the norm, but I'm afraid we might be heading that way...

No chance. As long as the legal method has more restrictions and limitations than the illegal one, piracy will thrive.

Deal? No I don't think 1984 needs to happen but thanks for adding to the conversation except not.

Well the removal of 1984 from kindles did show amazon's willingness to remove files, there's nothing to stop a remove and replace with a slightly different one that ability does bother me and its very like the actual story in 1984. I'd rather avoid having that story come true. That mainly means avoiding allowing people to have the power to censor everything on the fly and thus my first post.
If things are kept in the cloud then I want pirates out there with files that can be stored thus preventing from someone claiming oceana has always been at war with eastasia. Someone out there will still have the file showing that we used to be at war with eurasia. A minor part of the larger philosophy of don't trust the bastards. |
