Free Fridays just got better

saw this while browsing on the Barnes and Noble site

I like this. I like it alot. Because even though I have been converted into the digital age of e-books, I don't want the book store experience to pass people by. and if this gets people back in and still browse and still by that classic hard cover from time to time.

I went by today to pick up the coupon for this week's book to read on my iPhone (or more likely my husband's iPad). I was asked to show my phone & my app, and not only did he give me the coupon for this week's book, he gave me one for last week's book AND next week's book, which was way over & beyond what he had to do.

I picked up a couple of books for my granddaughter's birthday too, but no paper books for me - every price I checked on the bargain tables was the same as or more than the eBook price (I'm a Kindle and Sony owner, as well as B&N reader user). Not to mention the fact that I just prefer the eBook form.

It's too bad you have to go into the store to get it. Then again, it's smart marketing by BN and increases foot traffic.

Not only that, you have to go to the nook counter for the code.

Kinda defeats the purpose of the in store wifi, doesn't it?

On the other hand, the more I think about it, the more I like it. It forces people who might be introverts (a lot of voracious readers are) to actually leave home, go to BN and interact with an employee. It might get you talking and you get a recommendation. You start reading it over the free wifi and, blammo, they get a sale.

Ummm...sorry, I try not to let my marketing background out in public. You may return to your regularly scheduled message board.

Actually that's exactly why I like this. I know it's a little gimmicky but for readers and lover's of books it does give you a reason to keep going back to the bookstore. Something I hope to install into my children as well.
Maybe it's the booklover in me but a trip to the bookstore is something I hope will never go out of fashion.

I'm with you. However, I used to think the same about video stores. I don't, however, think bookstores will go that way for another 100 years or so. ebook technology will take a little while to catch up to paper. Then, the last generation raised with paper books has to die off.

I hope not, nothing makes as sad as seeing an indy bookstore go under and Border's bookstores being shut down etc.

The B&N's in my area seem to be going strong, lines are always pretty long and the cafe's are usually full. But I'm in a pretty heavily populated suburb.

Well I hope you are right

That's nice but the closest B&N to me is almost 50 miles. It would cost me more in gas driving a hundred miles then it's worth. Too bad you can't just download them from home.

I've gotten all of the free eBooks so far and have stripped off the DRM. Then again, we have a B&N that's just a public transport ride away.

Now that this is almost over (one more week), is it too late to point out that I believe this is a Monday thing, not a Friday thing. Since I work one short block from a B&N, and I take my Nook with me to work every day, I can easily just run over, stop at the check out at the front of the store, and run out in a span of about 2 or 3 minutes to get my voucher.
