Read foreign?
I've finished The Corruptionist by Christopher G. Moore about 3-4 months ago. The book is the lastest of his Vincent Calvino series telling about an Italian detective solving murder and mysterious cases in Bangkok with a lot of helps from his friend and supporter, a Thai cop. It's the first time I've read a book about Thailand written by foreign author.
My confession, I was a little bias when I started the book and the few first chapters are quite boring for me. After that, I simply couldn't stop reading and took the book with me everywhere. Later I think, I was bored probably because I'm a Thai, I've known all information he try to explain for as long as my life. The story are both intrigued and hardboiled. Digging up all the darkest sides of Thailand, corruption, spider-web system of Thai society, hierarchy, and politic, all are shown through the main characters' views. They shows the author's insight which keep me nodding from time to time. I've also noticed that many situations in the story had happened in reality. Some have re-happened again recently, make me thought I had a dejavu. One book leads to others. I tries to find more of the author's series in some ebooks format and found only 3 out of 10. Really wondering why not all??? ![]() |
